3 Major HGV Crashes in West Yorkshire

Not sure if this has a thread already but there were 3 major HGV crashes today (Feb 1st) in West Yorkshire.

A tanker overturned near Jon 42 Southbound on the A1, the driver was taken to hospital but I’m not sure how severe his injuries are. The A1 was closed from 8.am and remained closed all day

A HGV ran into the near side barrier, crossed all 3 lanes and flipped over on the M1 Jon 40 unfortunately and sadly killing the driver

A 3rd incident on the A19 Southbound saw that Road closed for a large part of the day, no info on the driver so hopefully he was OK

I was out and about around Jon 42 A1 and up n down the M62 Eastbound and back from Hull just an hour before that tanker crash, the gusts of wind and strong winds were very strong. Felt like I’d done a workout by the time I finished the shift.

I don’t know if the wind had any part in the crashes but suspect it did.

Be careful out there

Sadly, the driver in the crash on the A19 in North Yorkshire lost his life, RIP Drive,

Saw a picture of the Powder tanker on A1(M) this morning, looks like it’s slide on its side and T-Boned the concrete gantry spitting it open and throwing the white substance all over the carriageway…
It’s still shut now at 2100hrs…

Not casting any speculation on these crashes, but, I might have been inclined to agree with you, if I didn’t regularly see drivers (including HGV drivers) dicking around with their phones every single day. That includes those guys I meet who find truck driving so tedious they quite literally spend all day talking on the phone to their mates while driving their wagon.

I spend a lot of time, driving, on the phone to the current Mrs Donkey. But it’s no different from listening to the radio really…

Most people would tend to agree with you, but the science says otherwise. One is just background activity that has a relatively smaller impact on brain functioning and concentration than talking to a live human being, which tends to creates different patterns of brain acivity and measurably affects response times.

Here’s just two of the many pieces of research on that topic

Have to agree totally with above, I remember driving up the A1 while on hands free to a mate of mine and I was so engrossed with the gossiping that I missed the turning and drove a further 10 miles before I realized.

It’s was a bit frightening that my concentration was so much on the phone call and not what I was doing.

Yesterday I was driving up the M6 and a driver I was following was speeding up the slowing down plus moving about in his lane so when I overtook him and sure enough he was busy on the phone.

So yes it’s legal and most of us do it using Bluetooth or hands free but it’s alot different than listening to a radio

If I listen to a podcast for the second time, even straight away, I get so much more from it, because it is easy to zone out from it when something more important is happening.
