Witnesses have talked about a white Semi-Truck (C+E) careening down the hard shoulder just prior to impact with a “school bus”.
No sign of any white artic or school bus in the aftermath photos.
Doesn’t look good at all.

Article says that traffic was slow for a first crash involving a semi and school bus. All occupants were ok, then an out of control semi crashed behind the first crash into the slowed traffic causing that devastation.

That’s shocking, but it isn’t that obvious that this “runaway ramp” was going to be able to stop the truck?
It looked like one of our so-called “Suicidal Laybys” rather than a sandpit, and is there a dropoff on the other side of that low wall as well?
If you watch this clip - you can see what looks like a rather scary “runaway ramp stop” involving a paper reel load by the looks of it - the very worst “load” one wants to have a runaway IN isn’t it?
This looks like it is still a serious crash to me, and doesn’t inspire much confidence in using these rather tame-looking “American-style runaway ramps” - that’s for sure!
I’d be terrified to use such a ramp, like a kid who can’t swim standing on the top board - that immense pressure to “do it” - and yet all your gut instincts telling you you’re gonna get killed. Is it worth dying to avoid that humiliation that comes form climbing back down the ladder?
Thats some sleighride Winseer,I m sure I could smell the brakes from here,i once complained about my engine brake not working on my wagon in BC (west coast) answer was we will sort it back in the yard on the prairies ….what load did they give me ? a full load eye to the sky paper reels .Let me tell you coming down the coq(highway to hell) ,Rodgers pass , down the hill through Kamloops I was passed by most motors but at the brake checks and the heat detectors at Kamloops I was away before half o them that passed me balls to the wind cause their brakes were red hot and they needed to sit. If I needed to use a runaway lane I would have 100% no second thoughts about it,id rather get demerits and a fine and sacked than some o the things I saw splattered up on the rockies.
