3.5t Pulling a 3.5t Trailer

As I understand as soon as you add a trailer you require a tachograph (even when empty) if it is used for hire or reward.
There are also rules relating to 50km radius of operation centre, Domestic rules, Operators CPC etc etc?
Any relevant input welcome even if it hasn’t been mentioned above.

What exactly do you want to know?

If using a B+E combination commercially where the plated MAMs add up to more than 3500 kgs then what exactly will you be doing?

How far from base will you be going at any time?

Will you be using it privately as well as commercially?

Making deliveries on a commercial basis with the potential to travel outwith 50km on occasion. Not used for private use.

Tacho rules apply and if not under Eu regs at any point then I would record as - out of scope - which is likely to be other work for the regs depending on what you do on a particular day or week

Okay, so a tachograph should be fitted and operated as above. Would someone operating this combination as described require an Operators CPC and Operating Centre etc?

Not my area but I suspect yes

Yes ‘O’ licence is required if its hire & reward.

Yes opertors licence required for hire and reward ,and tacho, but no dcpc needed .no operators licence needed for own goods with this combination just tacho .

So…
Operators Licence and presumably CPC holder.
Tachograph with trailer attached.
No Drivers CPC required.
nyone disagree?

What deliveries - your own goods or someone elses goods?

An employers goods.

Is this your employer or your customer or your bosses customer?

Are you working as a haulier for this company or are you directly employed as a company driver delivering goods that the company owns?

You need a tachograph fitted and used for the complete day when you are above 3.5 tonnes, not just while you are, best practice is to manually record other days work, so you can prove it if needs be ( a diary will do)

this link explains it clearly - with regards to O licensing

hope this helps

Employed as a driver/installer of items sold to retail customers.

Tacho only then .

You may still need a tacho and o-licence, even if own goods, if the trailer weighs more than 1020kg unladen.

If possible it is best to tow with a ‘dual purpose’ vehicle as they are exempt from all o-licencing. It is mostly only pick-up trucks that qualify now although I suspect it was originally intended all 4x4s would qualify but manufacturers have been making them heavier so many no longer do.

Even with dual-purpose o-licence exemption though you will still need a tachograph. The upside with dual purpose is you can be confident you will not fall foul of o-licencing though.

Alternatively you can do what everyone else does, and what the authorities seem to be actively encouraging with their excessive regulation, and overload a Transit van.

I have no idea how the manage an o-licence for 3.5t towing for things like maintenance, OCRS and many other elements all seems very silly.

Seems like own goods so I think no full O licence needed but I think a restricted might be - not my area so need another to answer

No need to do manual entries for days or weeks when not under EU regs - simply record all on tacho in out of scope setting unless not got vehicle then manual entries might be needed

Is the driving the main part of the job or do you spend most of your day installing equipment?

The post is for pt deliveries and I’ve been asked about installations. So when doing installations the driving would be necessary but secondary to the installations. A workman transporting items to be installed at a customers house.

No restricted o licence needed ,just the tacho .
