We have just added a 3.5t Luton to our modest workforce. Mainly for Central London work and small jobs not viable or economic in our 10 tonner.
Looking into the regs on 3.5t and I’ve got to admit I am shocked at how limiting it is. We also have some third-party light hauliers that do some of our transport. They are not only overloading by at least 25% but are covering most of the country in one day with no log sheet or records. Seems to me everyone you talk to says the same. How come DVSA aren’t clamping on this.
I hasten to add we are running legit with it, although it would be easy to load more and make extra. We value our O License too much to set off alarm bells getting caught with a lesser vehicle.
And. Just saying… Sorry if I bored you.
I will embellish it with a driver being ex sas or how proud I am I got banned from Krispi Kreme for singing the theme tune to the Double Deckers ( ask your carer)
The operations you are talking about where they carry on with no logbooks may simply be because the drivers only ever drive vans and the vans are not in scope of operator licensing. The drivers may well be in scope of the domestic rules, but there isn’t an obligation for a written record to be kept in these circumstances.
They do seem to carry on as they please, but human nature kind of dictates that if there is no record that is the inevitable outcome.
I drove a Luton for about 10 years. I got pulled more in that than than the same period in hgvs. In fact I’ve only ever been pulled once in a hgv. I was once 300kg over weight when I got pulled. Genuine mistake and it wasn’t intentional.
Never kept any driving records as you didn’t have to, it was no different than a rep driving a car all over the country.

In regards to weight they are. My mate has been pulled in more times at weighbridges in his 3.5t box van than I have in an artic. As for driving hours there’s plans to require vans to have tachos fitted. It’ll probably affect the 2.5t and above first.

Vans obviously can get pulled and weighed.

And.
Surely if you are so concerned P. Stoff you immediately informed the authorities of your concerns or do you believe that informing tnuk is enough.
Ask your carers for the correct answer.

I got a right laugh out of that, no disrespect to Beau but that was some riposte.

Hiw much do you get fined if joe blogs with a removal firm gets cauggt overloaded?
I think its zero. Simple thing to do is mind your own business.
Have I mentioned at any point I was reporting anyone? No. I merely said we will follow the rules with ours. Not really understanding the hostility but hey.

What happens to job rates when laws are disobeyed: vehicles overloaded, excessive hours worked?
The rates drop and I (me!) stand to earn less wages.
So, what others do affects ALL of us.
Not my intention. I was trying to point out the irony of the hoops HGVs go through and that it’s different for the van boys. Guess I’ll sit quietly on my throne.
It’s been like that with Van’s and pick ups for as long as I remember, and I’m amazed VOSA and the Old Bill have not done one of their famous ‘clamp downs’ …think of the easy money they’re losing.
I started the job on long distance with a Transit pick up, if there was room on the back, it went on regardless of weight (within reason) , often to the point where the springs were curved upwards rather than down.
How tf I never came unstuck in one way or another,.especially braking …while doing 70+ in the 3rd lane, I’ll never know, maybe just lucky …but in defence, I was only 20, a bit mad, and keen and totally fearless at the time.
