24 volt microwave

I was speaking to a driver this week who said that the Gow truck stop are selling a 24 volt microwave that can plug straight into the socket in the cab, I have never seen one before nor did I think it would be possible.
Any help on this would be appreciated

Hi danch4.

Just been reading ur post. I would’nt dispute that 24v microwave ovens exist, but just done a calculation based on a 650w which would be a basic low powered model, then @ 24v, that works out at 77…? amps… A lot of amps for a truck type plug-in connection to handle!

Personally, I used to use my own 24v - 1000w inverter hardwired via a ‘cow bell’ connector to the batteries and a small domestic microwave appliance.

Hope this info helps.

24 volt microwaves certainly exist, I had them in a couple of my trucks when I was driving, but they cannot plug into the standard socket and need a direct connection to the batteries. Your lighter or Hella sockets in the cab are typically rated at 5-10 amps, maybe 15, and the microwave requires a lot more than that. It also wouldn’t be the case of just changing the fuses as the wiring to those sockets cannot handle the current demand of the oven either.

Our vehicles have microwaves fitted by Volvo, and they’re hard wired to the batteries. They use the same cable that’s used for jump leads, which gives you an idea of how much power they draw.

I smell something burning and it ain’t the dinner

That’s probably a wavebox microwave, runs on mains, direct to batteries full power and vehicle power socket, but at a lower power setting.
Was discussed here a while ago.

A microwave would definitely draw too much for the accessory/cigarette lighter socket. The wavebox type microwaves are pretty rubbish but they come with a similar connector. Apparently American utility vehicles have an accessory socket that looks like ours but is much heavier duty and could run this. We have never been able to source spares to be able to fix these wavebox ovens. Try and avoid.

Daf 95 and 105 superspace are pre wired straight into fuse box and they require a 40amp fuse to power microwave

i have a 2000 watt inverter wired direct to the battery feed in the cab and use an asda £35 750 watt microwave,ok the inverter cost me £230 but ive never had any problems with it and wouldnt be without it now
