Set to be £8.72 p.h.
Stobbart must be sweating as it creeps closer to their hourly rates. Their drivers might be due an increase in 2021 which will surely leave them ‘unable to compete’

Bring it on…
Dint get me wrong I’m comfortably above it for now but I’m not getting 6.2% as a pay rise. A few more of those though makes the wider job market more appealing as opposed to staying driving.
Why bother with the potential penalties, medicals, CPC etc when you can not bother with any of it just for a nominal drop in wages.
I’m sure truck driver wages will increase though, or perhaps another 10hrs a week can be squeezed in as a “pay rise” to make it “good money” because all that matter is the take home pay right? Not the week and a half worth of hours shoehorned into a week to get there

This …
2024 the living wage is going to be £10.50ph. Thats only 4 years away and about the time I plan on throwing away my HGV ticket for good and step into a cushy little office job and wear some pointy shoes.

Exactly.Company can increase to 13 p/h .But if they buy more trailers, reduced waiting time. And finally drivers will work just 45 hours per week and taked home less money that now.
That is just 28p less than Stobarts current hourly rate for days (£9 per hour). They have a meal allowance of £15/day that bumps it up a little but it’s not far off at all…
Once minimum wage catches up with most.compnays. there find ways round it
And most likely there cut over time rates.
Or Instead.of overtime starting after 8 hours there increase it to 10
It 12p more than one Norfolk hallier pays for class 1 .No name but it’s in the sky at night
“Fiscal Drag” will end up forcing everyone to re-consider their entire careers…
The most likely people to “Put up with it” of course - are the very ones who would be the first to benefit from any rise in the minimum wage, however.
That, in turn - would make those drivers currently earning way above the minimum wage - possibly ditch the full time, but inflexible working conditions job in favour of the higher hourly rates available on agency…
This would be a sea change, as currently drivers would rather earn less with a full time job than work 2-4 shifts per week for more money, such is the great British “Insecurity”, especially for those used to a strong Union environment.
What were Labour going to do for the working classes again?
I forget…
Vague on Brexit, no promises that can be kept as there would be no money, and actually very little promised to boot…
Didn’t they say that the minimum wage was under threat from the Tories?
That’s another escape hatch for Labour - well and truly closed out to them for the forseeable future eh?

I have noticed since Boris won that the labour supporters have gone quiet across the whole internet very quiet
A living wage in my opinion can only be one where all those working full time are outside all the benefit limits
If anyone is working full time and getting benefits then the Govt is in effect subsidising their wages and saving money for the employers
Am I right

Shock. And the realisation that things are going g to get very bad over the next 5 years. Make no mistake, the “cuddly baboon " is going to ■■■■ this country over, no lube, until theres nothing left to sell. The masses will look at the window dressing like “announcing an increase in the minimum wage”, and fail to see to the tax hikes and slashed public services. The more he and his chum Donald 'assure us” that the NHS is not on the table, the more you know is going to be sold down the river.
The tories have been in power for 9 years, and during those years they have constantly promised things, only to backtrack almost immediately afterwards. Theresa lied and continuously backtracked, and achieved nothing, absolutely nothing, in three years. Boris lied, backstabbed, and lied, and you think hes now suddenly going to keep his promises?
The increase in the minimum wage is going to really make a life changing difference to the millions on zero hour contracts…
It’s a very clever little government trick, pay the minions more money, get them on the tax ladder, like Hotel California, you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave [emoji14]

This of course is the elephant in the room.
The biggest problem facing many working people these days is quality of employment, not the lack of an extra quid an hour. I’d wager that there are many workers out there who would happily take a slight pay cut in return for a 40hr contract & some proper job security.
40 hours at £8 is better than 20 at a tenner.

Not quite as its the Tax Payer who is doing the subsidising.
So this “Living Wage” that employers must pay, based on a 40 hour week, is £348.80 per week, yet a pensioner on basic state pension is expected to live on £129.20 per week? Summat wrong somewhere…
