That’s all good and well until you need finance for new equipment or a fuel card or the bank get twitchy about the loan/mortgage

One thing never to forget about being an OD is that you should be salting away enough money to buy a truck outright in 5 years time, plus in the meantime enough to cover any breakdown you may have.
I am glad you are making it pay for you and good luck for the future

That sounds good to me, with the amount you need to spend in your first year it’s no wonder you didn’t make a profit, the second and third year should show better figures

I think about becoming an o/d… I’m currently a transport manager come driver for my family busines anyway, I just wish I had my own truck, longer distances and nights out. With a wife and a baby on the way it’s sort of gone out the window though.

Very Very wise advice, don`t take them for mugs, you will live to regret it :unamused:

You need to show “profit”, or, you will not get any assistance from the “money men” :open_mouth:

I won’t me bro used to work for them so even tho I signed my tax return he filled it out ,
 putting money away for maintance is not a prob truck on full r n m for next three years some people say its an expensive way of paying for maintance but it means I can sleep at night, things have been quit since Xmas but I’m still in the black with a comfy buffer zone of cash n no overdraft ,I find doin what I do if your propered to put your self out n do some jobs that you might not be making as much as you should they normally follow on to better work and every thing evens itself out in the end,you win some you lose some if every job was profitable I’m sure weed see lots of trucks painted red with the virgin logo on the side or may b even Alan sugar haulage!

No chance of Posh Chancer Branson getting involved with “logistics”, even if the rates were quadrupled, him and Sir Alan work on healthy % points, and even with quadrupled haulage rates, it still would`nt be worth it :open_mouth:

Sir Phil Green, on the other hand, knows his onions where trucks are concerned, aint he behind the scenes @ Clipper Group ■■?..he comes from a “penny” industry, and, is quite at home with low margins

Glad to hear its working out, any expensive breakdowns or diesel nicked?

No breakdowns I’ve got a Merc they don’t go wrong few tyre probs but nuting serious few probs with trailer few hundred quid to sort, but I just take each day as it comes who nos what tomoro will bring

There aren’t too many OD’s on 2 and a half quid a mile for a big PLC though MH…

Nope to be fair more like 2.49 but don’t want to get to greedy so I won’t argue bt the penny

Absolutely, did you see the news last night about the cost of building cars at different GM plants, all 3 mentioned (2 Geman & Ellesmere Port) all built new cars for UNDER 2,000 Euro’s!!!

Now that’s a profit margin!!!

Ross.

Why if you don’t mind me asking? Are you genuinely losing money or are you just not making as much as you thought?

It’s good to hear somebody prospering at the minute.

I’ve just had to lay off the driver on the Volvo and “out” the Daf. As of today I’m back in the Volvo.
■■■■ times indeed.

Fingers crossed this dark cloud doesn’t become the “Big one”. :open_mouth:

Making money just not enough to justify the additional headaches involved and have the option of doing something totally different so am seriously considering that.
