This is slowly hitting me, I am becoming worried about a job, once I have completed my cpc I will be applying… The only thing is, I am 24(I also have a degree but it’s useless hence going into driving! Wish I did this in the first place now), meaning I have 0 experience. Been told there are jobs, but you need experience, this really annoys me!Probably will have to go with a agency straight away, drive a van, and keep applying.
I’ve recently landed a job, full time, working for a company near me. I hadn’t even sat in an artic since the day of my test in Oct 2012. The company are too reliant on agency drivers, and want to set on their own new blood.
I got 2 days with the company trainer, perfecting my reversing, well not perfecting, but meaning I was confident enough to take one out on my own. Top spec MAN TGX XXL. My own unit. All going well so far.
Certainly wipes the floor with doing multi-drop in city centres in a puddle jumper, hand balling tonnes and tonnes of gear every day, stressed out like crazy, and running to the absolute limit, whilst usually on the limiter.
Place where I’m at now has just taken on a bunch of agency lads and two new guys, one of which is me. The other lad is also 24 and has been driving less than 6 months. The work can be hard as you may have to hand ball 4-6 of flooring off or it can be easy where all you do is turn up, pull your curtain and they fork it off you.
They do have their own way of doing things, they like you to take the shortest routes rather than the fastest. This lead me to have an argument with the TM over how to get to Carnforth. I wanted to follow my sat-nav which was going to take me on the motorways but he wanted me to cut through Bradford and head for the A65. Took me longer but it saved 30 miles but hey ho, he’s the boss. Plus the trucks are tracked so I didn’t want to risk it.
Other than that, its good fun at times.
Cut through Bradford, I live there, wish didn’t but there you go, no such thing as cut through, it’s crap. Best thing that could happen is a bypass or preferably a bulldozer !!
I’ll wave next time you have to be unfortunate to cut through!
Mind you A65 only gets better after Gargrave, prior to that’s it’s still a slow scenic twisty.
TM’s know best [emoji1]
Got my first job same week I passed my test. Full time, employed position driving artics. So, yes, it is possible. I drive into the yard and asked to speak to someone in HR or recruitment and got an interview. Not the best job or pay, but not the worst either. I might still like it after 2 years or I may want to use my gained experience to ‘trade up’ buy the only way to do it is to get out there and hunt the jobs out!
Didn’t realise status quo had artics■■?
Try Cvcenter cvcentre.co.uk apply to all the big firms and you will find something. dont worry about gears as most are automatic anyway or just ask someone in the yard if they have a problem then they are not worth working for.
I was in the same boat no experience so I got my cv done and never looked back, be patient apply for proper jobs through legitimate company’s paying a fair wage you may well be surprised at the results.
