A major route into Poole could be closed for nearly three weeks to allow traffic to travel freely from London to Weymouth for the Olympic sailing.

The proposal by Poole council has been slammed as “ludicrous” and residents, councillors, tourism bosses and businesses have all condemned the recommendation, which goes before the transportation advisory group on Thursday.

The council aims to temporarily shut the quarter-mile A349 link at the top of Gravel Hill to the A31 Wimborne by-pass for the duration of the 2012 Olympics.

This means that for two periods totalling 19 days in the busiest summer period of July, August and September there will be no access from the north.

The request comes from the Olympic Delivery Authority which aims to guarantee journey times between London Heathrow and Weymouth, which lies 32 miles beyond Poole.

The council has made a proviso that improvements at congested Canford Bottom are undertaken in advance — and in return the council will be able to display an “Olympic Partner” logo on its literature.

But Cllr Mike Brooke pointed out the “ludicrous” idea would not help journey times as east-west traffic has priority at the roundabout junction onto the by-pass.

“It ridiculous,” he said. “I think the local residents should be given far more consideration. The council should have been pushing for the last two years to get the dualing of the A31. That’s where the hold-ups are, where it stops being a dual-carriageway.”

Broadstone Residents Association vice-chairman Pat Talbot said: “As far as I’m concerned the residents take precedence. They have got it the wrong way round.”

Fears have been raise that the closure will push more traffic along already congested roads, through Broadstone and along the Spur Road into Bournemouth.

Tourism boss Bruce Grant-Braham, who pointed out they already used the Olympic logo said: “It sounds crazy to me. My job is to promote Poole. The Olympics generally is a good thing.

“But the town doesn’t want to be put at any disadvantage during the summer for tourists coming into Poole. It’s unbelievable. What are we, 30 miles away from Weymouth?”

Jim Stewart, chief executive of Poole Harbour Commissioners pointed out poor road links had resulted in reduced business for the port and was one of the main reasons Brittany Ferries axed the Barfleur.

“Poole Harbour Commissioners would be extremely concerned if the A349 link was closed, especially during the summer months when car passengers are trying to get to and from the port for existing ferry services,” he said.

Julian McLaughlin, head of transportation services said: “We hope that providing our co-operation will help to secure the government funding for the much needed improvement at Canford Bottom which will benefit local residents.

“We have insisted that the closure will only be in place for the three weeks that the Olympics is actually being held, and even then with the information we have on traffic flows we are confident that this should not cause significant traffic congestion in the local area.”

this has now been given the green light by the council

The crass waste of money when we are supposed to be in recession, or whatever, is just a reminder of how the average working person is treated by government.

I think I will just stay at home for the duration of the money pit experience. I find it unbelievebale that a quango can make the rules up as it goes along… :open_mouth:

God life is awful isn’t it. The thought of getting stuck in a bit of traffic for a brief period in 2 years time because the worlds greatest event is coming is so stressful, I don’t know how anybody does this job.

Thanks for reminding me about that, yet something else to worry about, I bet the traffic will be horrific.
