Driver escapes with only SLIGHT INJURIES after van horrifically crushed between two lorries

Police advised the lucky driver ‘to buy a lottery ticket’ after the crash on the M1 in Leicestershire today

Saw that picture yesterday and was certain that there’d be at least one fatality. I was surprised when in the afternoon there was no travel reports of the M1 being closed at the scene. As said, very lucky fella. Must’ve been made out of rubber!

Cue; jakethesnake for your words of wisdom !!!

Looks like that’s on the hard shoulder.

Why…

Is Volvo the manufacturer (as far as I’m aware) that gives the driver an airbag as standard?

They all do. They’re required to now.

Really?..

I wasn’t aware of that and it’s definately good news. The 69 plate MAN 510 I’ve been driving doesn’t advertise the fact it’s airbagged. There’s nothing anywhere mentioning it.

Only cars (and probably vans) I think.

Neither does my 20 plate scania P450. Then again, it doesn’t even have a passenger side window that you can wind down. So maybe having an airbag is pushing it a bit. [emoji53]

One comment in the article suggest the van driver was attending the front lorry, which had presumably broken down, dunno if that’s right.

He wasn’t in the van at the time of the accident.

2020 MAN advertise airbags and seat belt tensioners as standard fitting on drivers side.

There is a huge gulf between fitting them as standard and being required to do so.

Forget about whether it’s got an air bag or not. For one I thought volvos had the automatic emergency brake? And 2 I did hear a rumour this lane was closed with a red x due to the broken down truck in front. Whether that’s true or not I don’t know I wasn’t there. But if it is true the driver of the Volvo will have some answers to give to the police I would imagine.

The van sort of probably saved the Volvo ‘drivers’ life! Massive crumple zone.

Emergency brake assist, only became standard I think 2015/2016 we’ve 13 plates without and 15plates with.

Good point!

Since that is a hard shoulder area, theres a major question on how they hit it by looks of things straight on. Not even an sll lane running bit.

On airbags, our 15 plates DAFs dont have the AEBS, but had a 66 plate which did. Guessing it came in late 2015 or 2016.
