At low speed = very true
At high speed = get into open lane early
It boils down to how territorial and competitive you are really. I’m intensely competitive in as much as second place is merely the first loser, but I’m sensible enough to realise that if I take that competitiveness into my day job someone is going to get hurt and I’m at best going to suffer financially and at worst lose my freedom, and I’m far too selfish to give either up for a stranger I’ll probably never meet again.
So to that end I don’t get too worked up by folk barging in in front of me, there might me a muttered curse or a shake of the head but I console myself by reasoning that the 1 second they put on my journey also put 1 seconds extra wages in my pocket! I should thank them really.

Absolutely. On the A629 into Halifax from the M62 the dual carriageway merges into 1 lane. There are several large signs saying “please merge in turn” and everybody does. I wonder why they don’t have these signs (albeit temporarily) for approaching roadworks, lane closures or other pinch points?

Correct! Plus revel in the amusement of their “bigger than yours” bellends antics, as well as remembering that they are stuck there with you, and probably not getting paid to be!
