I’m normally very good with keeping tabs on my driving/other work time but not today - Not had a very good day today, as far a tacho regs are concerned.
Went over the 6 hours other work today by 15 mins because I could not find anywhere safe/legal to pull over. I had just left a drop and was on the road when i suddenly realised i had gone over the 6 hours rule. My driving time was fine but I’d done more than 6 hours work . So stopped for 15 min’s then did print out and put why I went over the 6 hour rule…
Then I inadvertently acquired another one later in the day and wasn’t till I checked tacho to see how many minutes of my 30 I had left I realised the tacho head said 4h31min driving time.
I was like oh - God dam it. Was a digi tacho and had to do a few shunts to get around a truck on diesel pump before I could park up so I’m guessing I lost 5 or so minutes or so doing that stop start.
Did yet another printout telling why I inadvertently went over because I had to shunt to park up. I did not know what else to put , I’ll get pulled for my first ever routine and they will prob think I was taking the ■■■■ that day which i wasnt , gutted
Within tacho regs there is no such thing as a 6 hours rule, that is something to do with the Uks working directive(I think) - so long as you didnt exceed 9/10 hrs max driving or 15 hrs spreadover (assuming you could take a 9 hr break tonight) you have done nothing wrong. I wouldnt worry about it.
4h31m is not a massive problem especially if you do multi drop as the digi steals time anyway.

after the 30min at 1pm i was in the yard at 2:45pm. and not back in till 4am tomorrow so my rest periods are fine.
i was just was having a crap day today and then i went and aquired those 2 infringements which could of been avoided i guess had i checked earlier. just lost track of time doing multi drop. hey ho life goes on.
If you are driving under the EU drivers’ hours rules
If you operate a vehicle in scope of the EU drivers’ hours rules, then you are subject to the Road Transport (Working Time) Regulations 2005 (as amended — ‘the 2005 Regulations’)
I am assuming that VOSA are responsible for making sure a driver keeps to these rules and can give a driver an infringement for not doing so
If they can penalise a driver then I also assume the penalty scale is different than for tacho regs
Relax…RT(WT)R, or the 6 hour rule is not inforced at roadside. the 4:31 might get a mention at a roadside check but that is all. At the end of the day we all have better things to occupy our minds.
Ive had more than a few infringements over the 6hours thing, never once worked more than 10mins over it, one infringement was for 2mins over it.
More points for me at work, think we get bagged after 24.
Another one last week, got sent home early and should have taken a 15min break but thought no rather go home, get paid for 8 hours no matter what.
Never had a single infringement for drivers hours, daily rest, or anything like that though.
Though came close today 4hrs 27mins driving before i took a break, went into Dundee for a delivery got stuck in rush hour traffic time piled on, then after i tipped couldnt stay there for a break, so trying to get out of Dundee to that big layby beside the BP garage, got there in 4hrs 26min, plus the tacho added another minute on once id stoped driving.
If ive done say 4hrs 31mins driving i don’t know if i would have slept tonight, incase the police and VOSA came along kicked in my door, think i’d have gone to the nearest police station and handed myself in
Enforcement guidance from Brussels suggests that it is possible for the
enforcement authorities of a Member State to apply a discretionary tolerance to
the driving period of 15 minutes. The guidance makes particular reference to vehicles involved in multi-drop operations and the 4.5-hour ■■■■■■■■■■ driving
period, where the driver can demonstrate that he has been involved in such
activity. Further, it should be borne in mind that the EU guidance states that
occasional and not frequent breaches will be permitted and only where evidence
of multi-drop operation is determined.
VOSA already applied a discretionary tolerance to the analysis of all driving and
break / rest periods. It is felt that the current arrangements cater for the tolerance
discussed in the guidance. For this reason, the Brussels guidance note makes
little or no practical change to the enforcement position in the UK.
VOSA notes that a driver of a vehicle fitted with digital recording equipment has
the capability to check their current accumulated driving time; in reality there is
little or no excuse for them breaching the legislative limits. There was a problem
with the displays on early Stoneridge tachographs, which could show a variance
with the recorded driving time; that problem has been rectified on models from
late 2007.
Edit: To be clear, this only applies to digitachs.

I did say MINIMUM
You wanna be a bit more careful over the water, I’ve heard it said the the Belgians in particular love overspeed warnings. They add up your total and simply fine you on that.
I like to see how close I can get, without getting a warning , pretty easy really.
Your tacho starts counting a minute, as soon as 91kmh comes up on it. At 90, you’ll cover 1.5km in a minute. So going quicker than 90 means I can cover exactly 1.5 km, then brake and slow down to 90 at 59 seconds. No Overspeed warning
I mainly do Germany n Swiss, you can get a good turn of speed up in The Ardenne
