19 Year Old's Progress Class 1 With Pictures

Hi everyone,
As some of you may remember last year i was here seeking advice and tips from you all, since passing ive had my ups and downs.

for a while after passing my class 1 in september it took a fair bit to actually get a start, finding work is not a problem in liverpool, theres loads actually… but as you all stated my age was a BIG PROBLEM!!! only 18 years old behind a 44 Tone artic does sound mad!!.

I signed up to agencies within a 50 mile radius of liverpool and jumped in my car on days off from work (Chef In A Restaurant) to drive to companies with CV’s etc… Nothing
“yeah weve got work… oh your too young sorry”

Anyway luck finally came my way, ive been on the agencies on my days off as a chef working for various companies with different agencies, ive even had to let agencies down due to either already working on the lorries or theyve wanted me whilst ive been in my other job!!))

Ive done agency work for;
Langdons in kirby (Refrigerated Class 1)
PDL Logistics in aintree (Class 2 Stillies work)
Optima Logistics in manchester (Class 1 curtainsider)
CSM Bakeries in manchester (Class 1 curtainsider)
Igloo transport in warrington (Class 1 curtainsider)
B+M Supermarket in Liverpool (Class 1 double decker box)

Terry Hayter Transport (Class 1 Container Driver)
ive been a busy driver, turning 19 in november 2012 i was called up by mark thompson (Liverpool HGV Trainer) to say some fella has rang up asking for a young driver for his small family company to work casual shifts, i jumped out my chef whites in work and raced to the yard for immediate interview/assessment drive with Terry Hayter Transport in Liverpool.

I stopped calling the agencies for while whilst i had work with this company every wednesday and thursday which was perferect for my chef job it just fit in with drivers hours etc, i had never done container work before and he took me under his wing and taught me everything i needed to know i.e skeleton trailers, how to slide it, how to make sure crane drivers slot the container in properly etc,

with this company being a 5 minute drive from my house things were great, occasional night shifts but mainly days, going to seaforth docks, freightliner in liverpool, eddie stobarts in widnes ports, hollyhead docks, skelmersdale etc and delivering to QVC in kirby swapping trailers left right and centre.

unfortunatley last month he had to lay me off due to not enough work coming his way, i enjoyed working for him, i had my own designated Volvo class 1 it was old but still done the job!!

Coming into April things were quiet and really really grim!!, agencies stopped calling me, i called them every day but they said the clients they had at the moment wont take me on due to my age, even though ive got a bit of experience now, also my chef job was scarce, the restaurant ive worked in for 3 1/2 years went into administration just out the blue, i turned up to work to find it closed and they didnt even pay us the last week we worked :frowning:(

Luckily another company took over straight away and im still there, still have a full time job as a chef :frowning: and no work from the agencies at the moment.

Ive decided to re-apply to companies again, i even rang eddie stobarts as i got shortlisted months ago, they said that it had been more than 6 months already and my CV was no longer on file but to re-apply and hed look out for my application bla bla bla
my friend and my dads mate who work in the tesco part and container part said widnes are desperate for full time drivers as theyre paying too much for agency staff who are ■■■■.

so i applied last sunday and whilst i was in work this friday i got a phone call from eddie stobarts asking me to attend an interview/assessment next week in widnes for tesco/chilled division  theres two vacancies for either
sunday - thursday nights or thursday - monday nights. Ive spoken to the lads i know in there and have had some pointers of what they want me to do etc.

Anyway as ive gone on a bit now, and some people have probably seen how long this thread is and thought “■■■■ that haha”
to wrap it up, im 19 now and have a bit of experience for people who are learning now or who have recently passed and are in a similar age group there is work out there who will even take on us young dumb and full of ■■■ drivers with no experience to give us a start and teach us the trade.

here are a few pictures ive taken, theres only a few on my new phone as my old iphone got stolen when i was in Northampton/daventry !! robbing ■■■■■■■■ took it whilst i was fueling the wagon up.

Great thread and very inspirational for all the young newbies on here.

Great pictures too.

A bit of a close call with the restaurant but luckily that came together for you.

Good to hear from the newbies that are coming through the ranks and not giving up.

Good read, good to see you’ve been able to get out there

I know it maybe a bit of a treck for you mate but I know our place in South Kirby (West Yorkshire) is looking for drivers and they don’t mind taking newbies on. And if i’m not wrong they do have vacancies for trampers. Some good snaps too mate, hope something turns up for you soon!

Cheers

Jonny :sunglasses:

Nice post mate. Hopefully that will inspire more young drivers to keep at it.

So, what’s the latest then. Have you been offered a full-time permanent shift?

Keep taking the snaps!

Good for you mate.

I passed my Class 2 test just after my 19th birthday and now have a full time permanent job driving dustcarts for my local council and I now look forward to work! I never had to do agency driving however it did take 3 months of continuous applying to jobs however I never gave up and it is definitely worth it! I was told my a lot of companies that I need experience and I was too young but eventually this came up. We are proof that young drivers can get employed!

Charlie

Suppose you could add me to the list working for a company being given a chance at the age of 19 at reed bordall in the transport office…as once I get my hgv license i’ll be a priority to get on the road…not bad going if i say so myself

Cheers

Well done! I seem to remember me giving you a slating last year, cannot for the life of me remember what for but there you go. Most drivers/assesors ive spoke to have said how theres a lack of new young drivers in the industry. How did you get on at Stobarts?

I passed the assesment at stobarts, but only for a casual position, I work full time now class 1 for M I HAULAGE/ RSA mainly general haulage but they’ve been throwing me onto containers as I have a few months experience when I worked for terry Hayter transport in Liverpool.

Been doing work for Goldstar and maritime transport recently although I work for M I Haulage we help out companies who have a lot of work, been tramping this week, I put a topic on the other day with pictures

Nice one mate. Great news.

I’m 20 in less than a month and had my Class 2&1 since I was 18, everything’s been great other than getting laid off on Christmas Day due to company administration but other than that…

That’s unfortunate mate, I’m 20 In a few months also, passed class 1 and 2 at 18 but only done the odd shifts on agencies then worked for 3 months for terry Hayter transport in Liverpool on containers class 1, he had to lay me off due to not enough work :/,

But things happen for a reason and I’ve finally got full time class 1 work for M I Haulage, cab hopping at the min tomorrow I’m in the third wagon I’ve drove from the fleet, hope to get my own designated lorry soon as in August he’s buying 4 new wagons

Hope you touch lucky soon like me, shows that some companies will take us on even if they have to pay a separate premium just for me haha.

just one picky thing, please lock the cab when you got to fuel up! save your phone going on holiday to Poland Bulgaria without you lol

Good stuff! Just goes to show that if you go out looking for work then you will find it regardless of age/experience

Very good thread  it has inspired me to carry on trying to get my hgv class 1 with the help of a local firm. I’m 21 and have wanted to be a trucker for many years but didnt realise I could of started earlier than 21 :frowning:

I can’t wait to get out on the road with all you guys.

If its what you want to do then don’t give up! You’ll get your break eventually.
