‘My mate!’ got himself into a situation where he ended up going through/over a weight restricted bridge (18 Ton MGW) in a 6x2 with fridge trailer which is blatently over the MGW. He tells me, that he did not see any flashes or red lights whilst goint through/over it. (It was the middle of a dark, frosty and foggy night so it would have been obvious to have been flashed)
The questions are,
Do all traffic enforcement cameras have a flash? or do they just film everything that ventures through/over the restricted section?
If a penalty notice was to appear then what is he looking at? Fine or Fine and points or a more finger licking good arse kicking?
Edited to add that he tells me that he blames it on the fact that it was Friday the 13th!!!

I have never figured out quite why we go on GVW for weight limits and not actual weights
A vehicle or set up with a greater GVW usually has more axles to spread the weight
It’s simple - you can check the GVW by looking at a plate in the cab, to check the actual weight you have to spend time finding and then travelling to a weighbridge.
Another reason is that increasingly these days weight limits are not there to protect delicate bridges etc. but to prevent big noisy smelly trucks going through housing estates etc. as a shortcut and in that situation it makes little difference to the locals if you’re loaded or not.

I love driving coaches…just ignore 90% of the weight limit signs…the clue is in the picture officer!
One of the small benefits of coach driving
Last year when the M40 was closed I came off at Cherwell Services and went cross-country in a 49 seater coach. There were a few villages where it was a bit tight…
Islip, I think, going down Kings Head Lane onto Wheatley Road Google StreetView
Still, learning curve I suppose I got a free Pizza out of it from the passengers

MGW does not mean the weight you are when going over a MGW signed bridge.
It means what your vehicles gross weight is when loaded.
So if your vehicles weight is 15ton at the time, but your gross weight is 30/40/ 44ton, you cannot exceed that weight, even if the sign is way below what your weight actually is at that particular time.
I get it all the time from delivering generators , at least once a week i’ll have nip through a weight limit just to get to where they want the generator dropping so they can get the power back on.
had one a few weeks back a 500kva down to Bradford on Avon at 2am and when i rang the engineeer to check where the set was going he said keep following the road till you come to the bridge with the weight limit on and we’re 400 yds past it
so far we havent had a letter from wiltshire council about it, but who knows
Hay1908:
He was empty so was probably under 18t, but the MGW was well over 18t.
Which bit don’t you understand chap?
Not having a go but it’s something you need to know for your own good if you are lorryist and it can seem confusing.
No, they reached their target on time rather than the others that waited in the queue on the M40 (because the news and the web reported the M40 open at the time).
Returning from the event we stopped off at a pizza place in Central London and they arranged for a pizza to be delivered to me in the coach, as the only place I could park it was on double-yellow lines near quite a few parked police cars. I spoke to the Police and they said that I could briefly park there as long as I stayed with the coach
But I haven’t yet had a passenger puke on the vehicle or otherwise mess it in that way, but I do try to drive carefully with the cargo in mind whatever vehicle I drive. Surely you do the same as well?

What Repton said earlier, but in this case in Bradford upon Avon, the weight limit would probably not be enforced as you were delivering a generator to the company repairing the bridge.
I am a nimby in my own village because there is no need to pass my property with anything bigger than a Sprinter van, yet there are are at least a dozen lorries a day blocking the roads up by ignoring roads signs

Not sure if thats aimed at me, but anyway, I know the regulations and so does my mate. He is not (nor am I) disputing the ins and outs of what is MGW or what is the laden weight or unladen weight etc etc. Being lorryists we fully understand the rules, just on occasions break them…oops!!
He and I both know that what he did is wrong and will attract a fine/punishment if caught!
If I could re-quote the original question.
The questions are,
Do all traffic enforcement cameras have a flash? or do they just film everything that ventures through/over the restricted section?
If a penalty notice was to appear then what is he looking at? Fine or Fine and points or a more finger licking good arse kicking?

Nooooooooo,it wasn’t aimed at you, that’s why I quoted Sweetleaf, and I wasn’t having a go at him either.I was just saying in a roundabout and hopefully nice way to ask if he doesn’t know.
Guess I need to be more direct.
Apologies for the confusion.
