12v or 24v

Is the cigarette lighter next to the radio on a 55 plate MAN artic 12 or 24 v ?

Pretty sure it’s 24

it should be marked at the side of it, failing that, take a volt meter and check it, it’s not rocket science

If you don’t happen to have a volt meter in your pocket it could be a bit tricky, a bit like rocket science.

On my 06 MAN TGA it’s 24volt so can’t see a 55 plate being any different.

24v…

There should be a 12v one under the dash, roughly in the centre.

Surely all proper truck drivers carry a multimeter?

Failing that, the OP could just connect a 24v bulb to the socket with a couple of pieces of wire and see if illuminates brightly or dimly.

Would be lost without mine

Yes, but you have to accept that SmashedCrabFace passed his test five minutes ago, so obviously he is here to teach, rather than learn.

Unfortunately you and I are not young enough to know everything.

Harry, behave yourself. Do you think the OP would have asked the question if he had a volt meter about his person? Not everybody carries a voltmeter. I have no need for a volt meter because I only passed my test five minutes ago…

…or could it be because I choose not to sleep in a truck for £20 extra instead of going home to a proper bed and my use of the 12v/24v sockets is therfore limited to plugging my sat-nav in at the start of my shift and then unplugging it at the end of my shift? I’ve got enough crap to carry around with me without adding stuff I don’t need.

Get over your obsession with me, old timer.

i choose to go home and sleep in my own bed instead of the truck too, but i still carry a volt meter

i take your drivers also carry one

don’t know, never asked them

but, then again, if they wish to know the answer to a question like this, they would actually have the common sense to find out themselves instead of asking on an internet forum

Too many know all’s here anyhow. They’ll be retired soon along with their ancient ways. Good riddance. :unamused:

isnt asking on a forum finding out for himself rather that just plugging in and damaging something. isnt the point of a forum to bounce things of each other

A multimeter is only a few quid and will pay for itself over and over again, but as said, connecting a 24v bulb to a cigarette lighter socket will tell you what voltage it is, if it’s 24v then it will illuminate brightly, if it’s 12v then the filament will glow a very dull orange.

It’s certainly better to check yourself rather than asking on the internet as previous owners have a habit of re-wiring cigarette lighter sockets to a different voltage to suit their own needs.

Its 24v from factory.

I want an ammeter.

get a decent volt meter and it will have one on it, otherwise known as a multimeter

No, I mean an old Smiths one with a chrome bezel.
