10% plus 2mph

Warrior:
cheers my friend,i have printed it off and will advise her to contest.needless to say she was done in nottinghamshire, enough said.

Any news yet, Warrior??

thats harsh…obviously caught by a “jobs worth”

Obviously caught by a South Yorkshire copper

32mph is a bit extreme though. Wonder what they would say if the Calibration Certificates were requested?

Conor:
Only one problem though…

A car speedo can OVER READ by up to 10% but can’t UNDER READ. So at 32MPH the speedo can legally be showing anything up to 35MPH. This is one of the things that gets my goat when you hear people complaining about being caught in a 40 lmit. For a start, there’s a good chance they wonp;t be considered unless doing 46MPH which, taking into account speedo inaccuracies, could mean their speedo was reading over 50MPH. To me that’s blatant deliberate speeding.

Exactly!
Don’t get me wrong - I don’t claim never to speed. But based on the facts that Conor has quoted I also have little sympathy for the "only just over " brigade.

Yes but are they facts? I’m no expert but I’d need to be convinced that any piece of mechanical/electronic equipment can’t be wrong in any direction. I’ve got a clock here that is losing lots of time merely because the hands are loose on the spindle.
Not contesting, just doubting.

Even if it is true it is there to allow for instrument discrepancies so what’s to say that your limiter/tacho is already at that limit of discrepancy and you therefore would be even further over the limit?

Salut, David.

I believe it was TOPGEAR that did a test a few years back. They took a few different makes of car and tested the speedo’s against a police calibration machine. In all the cases the speedo’s read under at 30 and 40 mph (they read 30 when the police machine said they were doing 34) they were all correct at 50mph and all over read at 60 and 70 mph so it just proves that the normal car speedo is most likely not to be giving the correct reading. It can cost you £60 though, as in the case of Warriors daughter. Police in Cleveland will prosecute at 32mph and that is with unmarked tax collectors at the side of the road. The van is usually an ■■■■■■ van with nothing other than red and yellow chevrons on the rear. The camera is placed in front of the van and the operator just hangs around for a couple of hours and then moves to another site. This is the type that I believe snapped me. I just wonder how accurate these camera’s are when they are being loaded and unloaded numerous times a day and then riding around in the back of a van.

   you only have to stick to the legal posted speed limits if your not a copper on or off duty !!! :unamused: :unamused:
