1 more bridge strike

Happened right in front of me, just outside claas on the Saxham ind. est. near Bury St. Edmunds last week. I was chatting with a couple of the engineers there when the air was filled with an enormous crashing, crunching noise. Took me about 2 seconds to realise what it was. Spanning across from the adjacent Calor gas depot is a railway bridge marked (if i remember rightly) at 12` 9".
Ran a few steps to the road to be greeted with this -

Instant conversion from box to flatbed! But just look at how far he travelled.
Drive (foreign gentleman - just saying :sunglasses: ) came wandering through all the mess with his head in his hands, like the sole survivor of an air-strike, muttering “Oh nooo, nooo, nooo - i looking at my gps”.

Gotta feel a pang of sympathy for him, but you drive like a plonker, you get bitten.

What is that? Looks like bottles of something. Did you grab plenty?

M&H - Beccles-based plastics company. Didnt pilfer any cos theyre too small for ■■■■ bottles, plus i already have a stock of empty Tizers!!!

Look like empty new ones, so not much use, unless you need a new ■■■■ bottle

I have heard two foreign gentlemen on their mobiles to their bosses I presume saying this and blaming the GPS for directing them in a disaster. Obviously these foreigners rely too much on their sat navs. We have a client where the sat navs both garmin and tom tom take you the wrong way in and the drivers warn you if you get that run but if a foreigner working for an agency gets it he is in trouble but this has not happened yet. :unamused:

You know these holes in your head called Eyes, yer the ones they use to look at the satnav, wouldnt you think they would occasionally look out of the big window in front of them and maybe, just maybe read the bridge heights…

I am being silly?

1 of our clowns hit an arch rail bridge a couple of weeks ago…and drove off :unamused: on suspension at the moment…

Heads up for anyone interested, the rail bridge on A507 at Baldock, Herts has had its height reduced, so watch yourselves if you are used to going this way or expecting 15 feet. Sorry only saw the warning sign out of the corner of my eye and missed the new height.

Our european cousins don’t like feet and inches…did it have the height in metric also■■?

If its a european haulier would be running at 4 metres, which is 13 feet 5 inches i believe…so 8 inches too high…live and learn i guess

No metric sign for our unfortunate victim, i`m afraid.

This is where the magic happened!

You can click to enlarge the images. On the second pic, you can just make out the bridge in the top left corner.

Didn’t see the bridge on the second picture until you pointed it out, I was too busy looking at the low bridge sign!

That should be signed in ft and inches as well as metric. The bridge should also have a round sign not a warning triangle.

I think the council may have to contribute to this one…

Hi. it dosent take a genius to stop if unsure and check with a smart phone feet and inches to metric or have a crib sheet of popular conversions. surly it would be common sense just to stop even if causing a blockage /delay etc
i would much rather spend 5 mins checking/planning than having to explaine what happened

Or am i just being obvious

Or measure your trailer/load before you leave and convert it before you leave

as for bridge at balldock my bridge height maps says its 16ft drove this way in fully loaded car transporter 15 10 imagine my surprise when i got to it no signs of height till you get to bridge ,right red neck stripping of bottom deck to get height down then through and reload  no my faut  yet my tuckers sat nav wanted me to go m25 m1 but i knew best and wanted to avoid the 25 just as well there is a 30 limit and not sittin a 50 :open_mouth:

Too many people don’t use there eyes and just follow there sat nav’s these days. This is a prime example of these kind of drivers!

Another bridge strike in my news feed today…but don’t say where

Yes, aren’t triangle signs for arched bridges to indicate the height in the middle? Also, lack of metric probably didn’t help.

I would duck just driving my car under that bridge. Welcome to the future of the trucking industry if desperate employers keep trawling the continent for drivers. UK test for regular UK driving…or UK Drivers’ CPC for driving anyone?

On a previous thread a few drivers were taken aback by the fact that some of us have tape measures in our cabs. Some also have height of available trailers in both metric and feet and inches. Tip for newer drivers…write trailer heights on a piece of paper in both metric and imperial, along with all other relevant info, like tyre sizes etc and tape it to cupboard above your head. Don’t leave it until you need that information at night, in the rain and 30 secs from featuring on the news, on here and your new job unloading the trucks you used to drive.

There a bridge near Bury St Edmonds that’s 8ft clearance? ?
