How the ■■■■ can he fine staff for infringements? As if its not bad enough vosa do it sounds like bull ■■■■ to me!
And it does sound easy, but I bet anyone having a go gets 100 no’s to 1 yes on the contract front. Then you need lots of £££ to even start.

hello ollie, none of the drivers have been fined or never will all it was an advisory by the advisors to keep the insurance down and show vosa as a new operator he has a procedure in place ■■■■ if he cares.his old tranport manager runs the warehouse where he worked at before he went selfemployed, and his rates are crap,he took on the contract with the low rates just to get started, london to leeds 26 pallets £225 one way and a return load of empty pallets £115. dont get me wrong but he works hard.

It’s 195 miles each way.

Further evidence that ODs are a bunch of thick [zb]s but no [zb] clue how to run a business. They just keep on coming…

Owner drivers that is what ODs are

Well that’s not difficult is it, when most ODs are barely covering their operating costs. And he certainly didn’t get his Q8 from running to London and back for £340
. Will be on the never-never or someone else bought it.
‘to leeds 26 pallets £225 one way and a return load of empty pallets £115. dont get me wrong but he works hard.’
I just cannot believe that anyone can run a max gross vehicle at those rate’s
These are rates from the 70’s and there is no way at all that someone is running a company straight without some other income or doing something not quite legit
Stand to be corrected though
Regards

He’s running for around 90p a mile, I would imagine diesel must be 50-60p a mile so assuming he is clearing 35ppm after fuel on 350 miles then he is making £122 out of which he has to tax and insure the truck, pay the finance, pay the maintenance, maintain the tyres, run the trailer paying for tyres and MOT…
And finally pay the driver’s wages.

See my post at 4:03…
I’m not working at the mo, but I could go out and buy a tractor unit tomorrow if I wanted, they’re cheap as chips right now but it would be cheaper to stay indoors tearing up £10 notes and throwing them out of the window than to work for those rates.
Possibly it is being done as a front, I know an Iranian doctor who owns a pizza shop miles from anywhere which has been open for 25 years and probably gets a dozen customers a day, he only runs it so he can bring his extended family over, they have to work there for some period of time (maybe 6 months) then they are free to go off and work elsewhere in the UK.

hello, got talking to a mate of mine inthe pub last week and he has gone selfemployed as an owner driver, passed his class 1 about 2 yers ago and bought himself a tipper, hes been doin days and advertised for a driver to do 5 nights,he has now a 24hr operation with 1 vehicle running 5 days a week,i thought he did really well as hes from india, but it did not stop him there he now employs a day driver to take his position and has bought himself a tractor unit and trailer and got himself 1 contract delivering tissue paper all over the uk which he has started driving himself.hes away 4 night a week but does not mind as its his own buisness and he makes it look so easy to do.i did question him on his cpc and servicing of the vehicles but all is in order as hes got a contract with volvo.working also with vosa advisors and finance people to work together to do his service and mots on time withought running out.he pays the going rate for the tipper lads and has included fixed fines for tacho infridgments(vosa advice) as his insurance bill tries to settle as a new buisness.£10 fine for going over 4.5hrs drive, daily rest,46min break… well done i think
say no more
can’t see how its being done “legit” and at a profit.
unless i had something on paper, for x amount of time, and money, it just doesn’t seem worth it.
i thought about it, 2 years ago, but honestly think i clear more as an amployed driver, for a small decent uk firm, than i ever would, as an owner driver, in modern times. don’t get me wrong, i do nearly max hours most weeks, but its legal, and decent work, for a decent wage.
think if your gonna set up on your own today, you have to be in a specialised market, if your in general, how you gonna compete, with the maritimes, wincantons, stobarts, etc, of the haulage world.
MM in the pub. thinks your OD MATE, is drinking too much

So what does that mean Harry ? Has he got drivers who will work for below minimum wage or cash in hand or he isn’t drawing any kind of wage from the company
As I posted previously these are rate’s from the 70’s I used to run down to London with export work going out through London & Tilbury Docks and also through some private wharve’s on the Isle of Dogs and the outward load’s always paid upto £180.00 or sometimes more and the return load was usually from Dover (Western Docks) currants or sultana’s for our warehouse in Oldham, paying £225 and as I was paid on 20% of what the vehicle earnt I was on a bloody good screw for an employed driver
This sounds like the kind of set up that is around for a couple of months and then disappears leaving drivers very out of pocket and lot’s of creditors knocking at the door
But as as again stand to be corrected
