daf were 698 for a head a fortnight ago, with gasgets and bolts parts were about a £1000. I think they do an sealant though to stop the leak for a while, this is the common fault with the xec.

What caused the head to crack in the first place ? ( overheating , lack of coolant ,? ) .

The sealant on the bolt fails, allowing the water up from the water jacket below, this then creates pressure in the area around the stud and it cracks at the place of least resistance. If you do the job yourself, make sure you clean the threads on all the stud holes with a tap, use new bolts all round, do both gaskets (makes sense when you strip it that far), and check with your dealer for the latest torque and valve settings.
Have you checked if the front head is leaking, usually go on n/s rear corner, just above the fuel pump. Check the face of head and block very carefully, any signs of wear and i’d recomend a new head. This really is the only major fault with the truck, and isn’t that expensive if you do it yourself ( allow 2 days for it).

The head bolts can be very expensive ( learnt from experience) IIRC there is a different part number that gives you the bolts in a complete pack that is cheaper, I think shuttlespanker knows the exact details.

Yer it was me that told lordy hanky spanky what to get
its called the warrenty pack “kin spelling” and the gaskets, bolts in this pack work out around £200~£250… for complete top end set, most daf"t stealers i mean dealers try to sell you the items separtley and works out very expensive, unless you ask for the full box and some try to tell you the box doesnt exist!!!  as its mainly just for daf"t dealers to use but they can sell you the box complete

That’s the one

i can get that fixed just up the road from me. at a guess it’ll be about £250 including preasure testing.
you’ll have to have it fully stripped.

I enquired last week on the head bolts and was told they don’t do the kit any more, you have to buy each one :frowning: . Have found them cheaper from a factor though.

You can get the full kit from the stealers i mean dealers if they wont sell you it go to a diffrent stealer i wouldnt really put bolts from a factors chooce what the factor said they came from etc… daf do this kit and they still do it as i only enquired a month or so ago about on for someone …
they dont like selling you the full kit as i say they will try there best to get you to by a box of bolts, a box of small bolts, gaskets etc they make more wonga, i think spanky had a similar problem when he first asked when i told him about the full box of bits they said they didnt do them i am sure that is what he was told at first

they can work some magic at that place.

that crack in the rear of the head is insignificant if it less that an inch in length

the water seeping is the tell tale sign that the head gaskets need changing

as Globby said, you can get a warranty kit which includes the gaskets and the head bolts, if you are mechanically minded, you can change the head gaskets yourself, if you send it in to DAF to do, they will sting you for approx 14 hours labour :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

do not re use the old head bolts, they have a sealant around them that cracks after time, which water gets past and knackers up the head gaskets
