AA recovery Drivers

Got an interview for this bunch in a few weeks. Any members already work for them or worked for them recently and have any opinions?

Also if anyone has a code for the AA staff forum that would be appreciated, so I can have a looksee!

Cheers

Its been on here before.

as for the staff forum code it is something like the part number for a spark plug IIRC

Others will be along shortly with more info

Questions to ask “Is it just a seasonal job”.
Shift patterns are geared to WEEKDAYS off ( Customer driven rostering).
Be prepared for all sorts of customers in your cab, some you will like and some you will loath.

You’ll soon discover how scary the hard shoulder really is. The sound of a vehicle running along the rumble strip towards you soon gets your undivided attention. That was the only thing I hated about the job really. Its a decent job that sometimes I wish I had just stayed. I was taken on as a seasonal driver and the offer was there to become permanent but I declined. I missed driving artics for some silly reason.

Be prepared for some weird and wonderful people in your cab.

If there is one light hearted piece of advive I can offer you, is never let a dog in your cab. I had a guy one night who had his dog with him when he broke down. He had the decency to ask if it was ok for his labrador to travel in the cab. I said it was no problem at all, but the dog ■■■■■■ all the way from Oban to Stirling. That tought me a lesson that did.

Lol funny you should say that about the dog, I broke down myself last weekend and had the dog with me. Guy wouldn’t let it near the cab. Had to stick it in the car on the back of the wagon. Ill be cleaning sick off my seats for a year!!

Job is fulltime. I did see previous post on here but is a good 4 yrs old - week a long time in politics and all that. I love the job I’m in at the moment but the cash offered here is really good and waaaay above it.

Unless its changed recently you are not allowed to do anything with cars, only winch them. Regardless of fault you are not allowed to drive.
It’s a mix if days and nights.
You use your card all the time, so 4 hours from base is about the max.
You get told when to have your brake.
You don’t always get the same lorry, they float around your depot.
Some customers will drive you nuts!
Some customers will make your day!
The hard shoulder will make your arse pucker up, if it dosent then leave the job!

Best job I ever had, although I was contracting for the AA, RAC etc I knew a few local guys. I do believe they changed the shift system recently which reduced some of the over time possibilities, but you can find this out at the interview.

Good luck!

Current main job is in tourism and I’m with all kinds of folks for days on end so cool with that aspect. Assumed you’d get a truck though - or at least a share, kinda like Tesco when you and another guy essentially share a unit.

Good to see its not all negative this far though.

When I worked there, you had to turn your work phone on about an hour before your shift started. You got a message telling you what truck you had been allocated. It was a different one every shift.

Our local AA flatbeds used to pop in my old recovery Co’s yard in between jobs for a brew & chinwag, 'cos their yard was just a coach park with zero facilities.

10yrs ago it was a brilliant job, nowadays you’d need to be fairly green to put up with all the BS that’s thrown at you.

Try it if only for a few months, but be prepared to be amazed at how they’re still in business.

Customers can be great & you will meet some truly wonderfull people, but expect a few ■■■■■■■■■■ These are usually the one’s who’ve been waiting 3hrs for you to become available !

I have an interview with this lot next week, anybody else got any infor good or bad with the AA

And i thought they were to stop you drinking, well at least they have moved on to recovery work, in a different way, theres recovery from alcoholism, and recovery from a vehicle incident.

mate of mine used to work with then it was 4 on 4 off and was a good job then as loads of overtime and you can opt for pay per job where they pay u a rate for every job u called out on when on call and its easy make 300/400 a night for your troubles
but he left as its all changed now 5 on 3 off with very little options for overtime
everything is strictly by the book and they will keep you busy during your shift you wont be sitting around but as for any tools for the doing the job they will give you more then enough and order when you want more
other downside is a diff truck everyday and listening to the people you pick up
hope that’s off help any other questions let me know and I ask my mate

Mark22_2:
You get told when to have your brake.

Now THAT’S scary.

Ken.

brake or break
been told when to brake when driving could be scary

Break! ■■■■ iPhone! lol

What I mean by this is you may drop a customer off and phone in and get told to sit tight and wait.
Pays to take food and a flask with you cos that snack van you were eyeing up may not be on the menu!

The guys going for interview need to check what contract you are getting offered as all the adverts I’ve seen this year are 6 month temp ones.

I tried for this last year. (pretty sure it was 4 on 4 off). I know I live further from the nearest depot than is acceptable to them. Explained I would stay in digs nearby when working. Nope, they wouldn’t accept that. :frowning:

what distance is acceptable to them ?

I know they wouldn’t take a guy on from Kilmarnock to work at the Glasgow depot. Slightly over 25 I think. Thing is, it’s nearly all motorway from killie to Glasgow. Probably wouldn’t have taken him more than 30mins to get to the depot.

They’ll get busier over the next few years as the RAC are in self-destruct mode.

Interesting comment from someone in a position to know.
Who owns them this week, BSM lol?
