I’ve got 20+ years in with the brown and yellow company from Devon that begins with G and I’ve just about had enough, moral is at rock bottom the transport office have all but given up being anywhere near professional and now we’ve been told the small bonus that we get each year for not damaging the vehicles never existed according to our HR department.
They’ve handed out the traditional Christmas hampers to pretty much everyone else in the depot but apparently don’t have enough for all the drivers, we’ve worked our assets off the past few years through some of the worst times I’ve known in road haulage and it all just feels like a boot in the nuts.
I know the company doesn’t owe us anything but they continually spout about how much they value their drivers on social media and it’s just garbage, they even gave a pretty feckless manager his 15 year long service award after telling the drivers ( several of whom have well over 15 years service) that they weren’t eligible until they’d done a further 15 years service .
If I could turn back the clock I’d do anything to avoid ever joining this company.

Corporate race to the bottom then ,

It all sounds pretty poor, but that really is taking the proverbial.
I was briefly employed directly by Gregorski after being TUPE’d over, and had the pleasure of working “for them” in a contracted fashion occasionally since.
I would not give them the steam of my ■■■■.
I dont place any emphisis on whether a company “values” me.The way I look at it,nobody gives a ■■■■ about me expect my own family and friends,so I dont worry if I get anything at Christmas or other gimmicks
I just work for the best company I can that offers the best money and conditions in the area, and if youve done that,at least you know you did your best with what skills you have to offer

Out of interest, which depot are you running out of ?
The subbies are about to get a kick in the proverbial`s according to a mate with a few on for them

I take your point,.and I’m.assuming you now work for a decent firm that looks after you, irrespective of whether or not you appreciate it or are bothered,.and that’s fine.
It baffles me though why these type of firms mentioned in the o/p, who habitually treat their drivers in a cynical way ,.who don’t care a ■■■■ about them, and who instil policies like (dare I say it…) cameras, charging for damage, to name a couple of examples, and generally as a matter of course aggravate and wind them up with petty crap such as penny pinching wages, or on a less serious note show no appreciation say at Christnas time,.where a simple bottle of wine or a case of beer would go a long way for very little cost.
(Esoecially when the office staff receive no end of perks at Christmas ,.which kinda illustrates how they look upon us)
These firms will never be ‘Team Companies’ as far as drivers are concerned, but will always be a '‘Them and Us’ type outfit,.they look on drivers not as an asset as the good firms do, but more of a necessary evil.
In this job as far as I have always been concerned, it’s a reap what you sow scenario, if you are ■■■■ ed about as above, it does not make a happy ship,.and it creates a ‘‘■■■■ em’’ or ‘‘wouldn’t ■■■■ on em if they were on fire’’ type attitude, …it’s human nature …(although the yes men and the crawler contingents continually fail to see that ,which kinda let’s the side down,.so consequently nothing changes )
Where as if they treat you like grown ups, look after you,.and show it,.the drivers attitude is much different,.and things are more productive so they then benefit from it.
As you can probably guess I am speaking from experience here of both types of companies, and in the distant past I have employed drivers .so I know what I am on about on this from all angles…
Any firm bosses or directors reading this,.and who actually care…TAKE NOTE.
The brown and yellow company are the same as the blue brigade just a little bit further up the M5. Both started by Daddy and were great. Now Son’s are running them and both have lost the plot.

TBF, the B&Y mob were started by the grand-daddy over a 103 years ago, and the present “gaffer” took over when they were a 30 truck operation [I`m led to believe], so It`s actually been driven forward by the grandson to the size they are today [which is massive]…and too big for the likes of Culina to have a look at
It`s about to get a bit “twitchy bum” for the economy and by the looks of it, the lower management have been tasked with ■■■■■■■ everyone off to flush out the dead-wood & the tired and weary long termers to save a bit of dosh if redundancy needs to be sanctioned
The B&Y mob have shut a few depots recently [Thame & Minworth] which seems to have flown under the radar, so they dont mess about if something ain
t working

Cullompton, I’ve heard things about the subbies too and about goodbye letters for some drivers based at a nearby operation run by ‘G’, looks like the big ship is taking on a list.

Gotcha, my mate runs for NT-HQ and the manager there is bit like your`s by the sounds of it, flippant & oblivious to what the drivers do for the company [employed & subbies]
They were advertising for “analysists” on £serious dough and able to WFH not so long ago, and I know that really ■■■■■■ off the lads on the frontline

If you look at their books, and the way they work, they own most of it, and they don`t mess about with payments to their suppliers, which in this game is a sure fire sign of stability, they are massive without too many really noticing it
They are into just about everything, from milk collections, to walking floors / fridges / contract distribution / pallet networks / general / fork-lift transport / property / chilled storage / ambient storage / et al

May I suggest that you ask HR if they object to you referring this to your Union.

I think they have, but if your rep is the company pocket, you ain`t got no paddle anyway
I did a stint many years ago with a DHL outfit and the two reps were only interested in what little they could get away with doing in a day by cherry picking the runs before anyone got in, and then they sat in the canteen tossing each other off whilst laughing at the prols
I did`nt think it was supposed to be like that, but apparently its the norm at most places, silly me

Works for me. It’s why I’ve done agency for so long. What a client pays their drivers is of little concern as I get paid more and if I don’t because it’s one of the few unicorns there are that pay really well like RM then I’m on parity after 12 weeks anyway, if they turn out to be a crap job I just tell the agency to send me somewhere else and add them to my little black book. Work smart not hard.
