Do you have to have done any driving before you can do a split daily rest? Would 5 mins other work count?
I’m getting short on 15’s and it’s very common to spend first 4/5 hours of my shifts on standby as a spare driver. If I can manual entry 5 mins other work and then the rest on bed - it would help me out a little bit.
To answer your question, no there is no requirement to do any driving. 5 mins of other work following by 3 hours of rest would be fine.
If however the first 4/5 hours of your shift are on standby without doing any work, then your spread time shouldn’t start until after that anyway.

I think he means he is “spare” as apposed to standby. Just the cover for someone going sick

You can have the first part of a split daily rest period after a few minutes other work without having done any driving.
Bear in mind that the first part of the split daily rest period should actually be rest not break, but no-one is likely to know that you couldn’t dispose of your time freely unless you tell them.

Exactly.
They take my number. If there are spare units I can sit in one and read or sleep. I can also go to the canteen and eat. As long as I stay on site I can do what I please pretty much.
