HGV WAGES.

General is ok to learn the ropes, but pay is rubbish. You’re talking 550-600 a week and they all pay the same. To earn decent money you’ve got to do tanks or cars or something else more specialised. That said you earn your money and work long hours.

I still say, if they can afford to pay the rates I’m getting now, for xmas, they can afford to pay it, or certainly a lot more the rest of the year too.
I know they are selling more, but they Assisi have more drivers, so its still the same amount paid per tonne moved per mile.
I’m here, hotel paid for, £195 per day (PAYE), fit ten hours. Anything over that is OT. I got sent back to the hotel after 6.5 hours, and that’s not unusual.
If they can’t afford it, why would they do it?

to keep the companys sweet for when times are quiet a loss leader of sorts “when times were busy we didnt up our rates and keot your goods moving now its quiet hopefully you will use us not our ■■■■ taking rivals”

scotstrucker:
hgv wages been on downwards spiral for years mainly due to everyfirm undercutting each other for work, depending on areas wages can be worse in one county comapred too 20 miles down the road

HGV wages have never escalated up far enough to spiral down, its always been do the hours to get the money.
While there are “newbies” and people who, lets say, have had a dubious life style, and wanting a job you will always get Companies paying poor wages.

Sometimes I take a hit on a job because I am contracted to deliver goods. If I have failed to price something correctly, if I have to buy in extra drivers, if I have to pay a subbie more than the rate, then I do it because I made a deal with a customer.

We never have agency drivers so your scenario doesn’t actually apply to me, but I can understand sometimes you have to pay more just to get the job done; if you had to pay those rates of pay all year, then either you’d be out of business or negotiating new rates on Jan 2nd.

I first started class 1 work on a part time / casual basis just shy of 3 years ago and only job I could get was with a large firm and was on £9.09 an hour and then overtime after 11 hours. Once I gained the experience and did quite a tidy job, spoke to the gaffer and said right I have got experience now, do a tidy job, but can get more money with other companies over the wkend and asked for a pay rise, got one, not much but now on £10.90 and increase in overtime rate. Granted it’s not much of a pay rise but better than a poke in the eye!!!
I guess bottom line is… Don’t ask, don’t get!! I know I can earn much more at other places ie agencies, supermarkets etc… But don’t want the hassle of cab hopping every day, uncertain hours, lack of nights out etc etc… So reasonably content where I am for now as know the work and guaranteed work when I want it.

I’ve had several Class 1 jobs since starting, including tramping and night trunking, and none of them have been over £9ph (lowest being £8.30 as a tramper)!! Took what I could being a newbie and living in North Norfolk (much lower wages than elsewhere I’ve seen) but in the end thought what was the point and now get paid more for driving a van around emptying streets bins!! Still do some day trunking every other weekend on agency at £12.50ph but just wish Class 1 work paid more in my area.

Was just talking to another agency driver in the 'driver’s lounge’he says he’s got £13ph year round from his agency. Working M-F.

Did he mention the words ’ Herald ’ or ’ balcony ’ ?

Yeah, apparently he only just missed it!

…poor bugger broke both legs.

Seriously though, it just occured to me that he’s probably Ltd. Like every other driver I’ve talked to in this depot.
So that’d be more like £11 ph for PAYE which is bang in the middle of what I usually get (xmas aside).

Wages round those parts are going up, I know severall places paying £10ph or very close. But you’re right always been low paid area for most jobs.

I’m guessing maybe Starlings? Drurys?

Wages will only go up from the down upwards. No one is going to suddenly offer more money as there is a ready supply of people working for poor rates. Not just EE drivers. The only way the rate will rise is with drivers making a stand. Alas that won’t happen.

Not sure about them, can try and find out, but Saxon and TC are, as apparently are green Medlers, and as the haulage industry in that area is pretty incestuous, with the same pool of drivers going from one company to another, I’d imagine the rest will be getting close.
