Has that got a fishtail exhaust pipe?

Could have knocked a few more milk bottles over with that down Buntingford High Street. :unamused:

Yes it has, we had some that came new with them fitted.

Pete.

Thanks Pete, didn’t think my eyes decieved me, but I can’t recall seeing one on a wagon before, more a motorbike thing.

Since I jerked my memory into action, but only partially (normal these days :unamused: ), I seemed to remember having to go through Buntingford before the by-pass to get to a Sainsbury depot, and, as the narrow street made a side exhaust lethal to the empties left out, we created some chaos. Is my memory faulty, or was it somewhere else?

The 2 stroke engine would have been a transplant as I am certain when it was new and working it had a 6LXB engine. Cheers Dennis.

Wasn’t Monmouth considered a target for such things, David?

Probably was, but I was far more concentrated on getting round that blind 90 degree bend in the middle at the same time as another artic coming in the opposite direction, to notice the displaced glassware   .

Yes Dennis, it had a Gardner fitted from new. I remember a few (many now I suppose? ) years ago when we were resurfacing the Nottingham Ring Road near Humber Island and I think it was Good Friday around 5pm, that Foden was just setting off from a set of lights (show bound I guess?) and my ‘gaffer’ at that time went all starry eyed at the sound it made! He had driven a six wheeled powder tanker for Bernard Swain at Cromford in the 60’s and that was ‘stroker powered’ and it brought it all back to him. Downside of the twostroke was that Bernard could tell exactly when he (and the sister Foden) left the yard as he could hear them from his house, the two drivers later got around that by parking at the quarry and going the ‘back route’ South via Wirksworth so he couldn’t log their leaving times! I know what you are thinking; “Doing a poor haulier out of a few quid…the rogues.” :imp:

Pete.

240 in a J reg? nmp

Very debateable ! as I believe the 240LXB’s only appeared in late '71 or early '72 on K reg ERF’s, Fodens and Atky Borderers, however as Fodens were one of Gardners favourite customers could they have sneaked a 240 engine into them prior to August '71 ? I would think it is doubtful as both ERF’s and Atkinsons would have been clamouring for their launch engines ! Cheers Bewick.

HI, MR B , WE RAN AT LEAST 4 K REG ,AND 3 L REG , WITH THE S 40 CAB ,240 GARDENERS AND A K REG ERF 240 GARDENER , JUST A BIT OF USELESS INFO MR BEWICK ,CHEERS BARRY

And if she had a 240 in her , would they have sold her to Redlands? Hardly a true blue Foden user! They were more likely to have Leyland than Foden.

Foden introduced three new vehicles for the 1970 Earls Court Show, an Eight Wheeler 180 Gardner 6LXB powered and two Tractors, one Twin Steer (as in the pic above) and a double drive six wheeler with a ■■■■■■■ NT270B 270bhp engine and the Twin Steer with the new Gardner 8LXB 240bhp engine. All models built for the proposed and hoped for 38Ton limit change to the C&U regs! The S70 fibreglass hydraulically mounted cab was also new to the tractor models and the Eight Wheeler had the S50 steel half cab. The tractors also had the same clutch, 12 speed box and 6.5ton front axles and 19ton cap double drive rear bogie as the 8 Legger but a new single 10ton rear axle with high speed double reduction hubs in the Twin Steer model. So the vehicle in the pic shows the correct engine badge. These vehicles did sell in the UK despite doubts about the expected new weight limit coming into use 1972. Franky.

Well done sir! Cheers Coomsey

Back to older days with this one. Surely the specialists will tell more about its model, year, engine and payload, though i’d say it"s carrying some 20 cubic metres of coal.

Great photo. Its a S18 model. Engine, 6 LW Gardner or Fodens own Stroker. It has a Southampton Reg 1949/50. Payload at 24Ton Gross 16 Ton, Regards Larry.
