Fearings of Burnley

hiya,
Was over Burnley way for a run out a few weeks back, parked the
car at the junction of Cog Lane and Accrington Road, I found very
little evidence of Fearings having ever been there the head office
address given on Google turned out to be a private house there is
evidence of a lot of stuff being knocked down since last I was that
way, must be a bit sad eh’, when 21 and brand new I did my first
bit there and here’s me at 76 trying to recoup my youth, my wife
says I’m crackers, I am inclined to agree with her, she wasn’t best
pleased having to spend an hour sitting in the car while I had look
round with nothing to report afterwards, to be totally truthful we
was en-route to see my brother who lives in Bacup and did a little
detour out of curiousity.

hiya,
The Roma was about a mile further on than Hinchcliffe’s (still there)
the Roma was just a little way up the road from Bury town centre no
longer there though, it was quite built up where it was but you could
park in the side streets and on the main road in those days, although
I did use Hinchcliffe’s on occasion the grub was OK in both places.
thanks harry, long retired.

Harry i used to work that area prior to retiring,i did all the paper mills at darwen, little lever, ramsbottom, holcombe and knew the hinchcliffes family and drivers,a good firm. Now the roma cafe is causing me probs,i used the one at hinches yard, also used one further up the road on same side, forgot the name[no longer there]heading towards rawtenstall. The only roma cafe i knew was at the bottom of warmesley rd in bury at the junction with the by-pass but very little parking,is this the same one?
regards dave.

hiya,
Yes Dave that’s the one, long gone I’m afraid, after passing Hinchcliffes
it was well down Walmersley Road on the left parking in the side streets
and on the main road in my day.
thanks harry, long retired.

The Roma was on the B6219 Bond Street which is between Rochdale Road and Wash Lane. Smiths haulage was next door towards Wash lane, I think they have now moved to Pilsworth Estate.

Harry, I had a brew with old Jack Birchall ex Bowker man last week, he is doing well and has recently sold his hotel in Torquay.
He came up to see his relations and we met up at the Leyland lorry museum, another old Bowker man met up with us, Harvey but his last name escapes me.

Tek care old lad.

hiya,
Remember it Dave I do, but never used it it was well patronised by the
parcels lads if my memory is still working always plenty of BRS parcels
and Wilkinsons lads in there not much parking and it had to be in the
side streets even in those days there wasn’t any room on the main road
because of the proximity to the junction. Can’t recall the name though.

The cafe heading towards Rawtenstall was the Dusty Miller, long since redeveloped. Going back around 15 years when we were running MAN units some of our lads who were found to have a heavy right foot were taken out in a 17.401 on a Rochdale-Todmorden-Bacup route to allegedly improve their economy and Hinche’s cafe was the stopping place to(officially) discuss the event, always a friendly welcome I was told.

hiya,
Am I the only driver still in the land of the living (just) who worked
for this old company, I did a couple of spells there in 1957 and again
in the mid 1960s, I am pretty certain there was a lot more than just
me and some of them where longstayers, I wasn’t there very long on
each occasion but the travelling from my home to the job was the
only reason for leaving, nothing wrong with the job or the wages.
thanks harry, long retired.

hiya,
Have only ever seen one pic of a Fearings motor which was their wrecker an old
Leyland went by the name of the “Happy ■■■■■■” pretty sure it was a cut down
Octopus which used to be on night trunk pulling a drawbar trailer and if so was
the first motor I drove whilst the regular driver was off on the sick, I was just
turned 21 at the time, happy days eh’.

At last a bit of interest in the Fearings pages and I’m fairly certain the little Guy

hiya,

hiya,
Welcome to TNUK Nick 2013, don’t think Brian would remember me and although
I worked for Fearing’s a couple of times firstly in the 1950s and later in the mid
1960s but only for brief periods so Brian is unlikely to remember me there was a
bit of chopping and changing of drivers in those days and Brian is well into his 70s
now and maybe he isn’t aware Trucknet exists, I live too far away now to make
contact with him but should you see him in the street you could maybe let him
know that there’s still interest in his “old company” and any contribution from him
would be very welcome, thanks for the post.
thanks harry, long retired.

hiya,
A Happy New Year to any old Fearing’s drivers, or am I the only one left,
surely there must still one or two knocking about and they only shut up
shop in the not so distant past.
thanks harry, long retired.

hiya,
Come on lads, are there any newbies on here with any pics or information.
thanks harry, long retired.
