PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION

Remember when going scotch (if from the south), or going down to the smoke (if from the north), was long distance?
When Middle East work was readily available?.
When driving a 111 or F89 meant you were truly the king of the road?
Recall those companies long gone, where every day was an adventure?

What ever happened to those drivers you spent hours with.. where did they go? and recollect on those characters in the industry sadly no longer with us.
This forum is for us all to indulge in a little nostalgia and remember with rose coloured glasses how much better it was in the olden days

I always wondered what happened to Durhams, now I know. Bob Durham had a big fleet at one time doing a lot of work for ICI. They won "Haulier of the year" sometime in the 70s. They took over Sandersons of Middlesborough who ran some trunks to Lichfield changing over with S Protheroe from Swansea.
Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you all. :D

Hi Chris, yes my father and uncles all drove for Sandersons and as you rightly said night trunks to Newport and changeovers with S Protheroe at Lichfield, also a changeover at West Bromwich. PD group IIRC had a Mercedes Benz franchise hence the Mercedes wagon, another firm from Scunthorpe area that you may remember was Consolidated Land Services who were also part of the group.

I remember Consolidated Land Services very well, they were on Grange Lane Scunthorpe, did a lot of steel, long loads. They were formed by amalgamating North Lincs Haulage and H and L from Workington.Tanker Hire was also part of CLS,they did a bit of work for A E Evans in winter.
Them were t'days when we were on neets.

windrush wrote:The Tilcon Foden S39 in Metalairs advert was probably one of two destined for our Ballidon quarry in Derbyshire Dean as they had the smaller tanks? We had TRB 132K and TRA 243K driven by Harry Glover and Ian Slater, both long gone alas. I did several trips to Metalair at Sutton Bridge to either collect brand new tankers or a new chassis which had the old tanks removed from the previous trucks refurbished. They had two mobile fitters, one (Rick) lived locally to the factory and was sadly killed in a road accident and the other (Steve I think??) was also a local lad but was based in Cheshire. Both did work at our quarry converting the tanks from probe to pad discharge which took a couple of days work for each one. Thank's for posting, and have a Good Christmas.

Ah! Ken Miller senior who I knew via my Pal Mail Woodhouse Snr. The name conjured up a memory from 1975 when I sold Ken two Borderers MEC 98K & NEC 260K and, so I was told, they both ended up at Leyland Paints running between their manufacturing plant and their warehouse. Very decent bloke to deal with Ken Snr and I believe it was Ken Junior ( or "young Ken") that would run the haulage business but I never met him. Cheers Dennis.

Hollis had a Leyland Terrier with a Luton body which we serviced, it had water in the sump (the usual liner seal problem, though not so common on the 98 series engines with twin seals in the block instead of a single one like the older 5.1/5.7 engines) so I fitted new liners etc. A few days later it came back with water in the oil again! Thinking I had split a seal it was stripped again but nothing visual was found. So it was rebuilt again but the sump was left off and sure enough water was weeping slowly from a liner. Took it apart yet again and a torch and mirror showed a blowhole actually in the seal groove in the block casting. A new short engine cured it! In all my years working on BMC wet liner engines that was the only such case I came across.
Pete.[/quote]

Morning Pete, Great storey.
Got to ask,,, who paid for this job, if I remember right they were not two very shy wall flowers forgiving of everyone's sins.
I remember when we all got excited about the "new issues" with wet liners and the dreaded Electrolysis. Harvey

I have no idea about payment Harvey, I was only a fitter! It may have been under warranty of course as I don't think we did other work for the company, it was one of the early Terriers I think and had the four pot 4/98 engine which were generally quite reliable. They used different liners which you had to lap into the block with grinding paste to acheive the correct standproud above the block face so as long as you got them all fairly equal they didn't give the problems of liner drop like the earlier BMC engines. I don't think they kept the vehicle long anyway, they soon moved up to larger trucks. As our garage had just had the yard tarmacked over, and it was a lovely summer, I did the job outside in the sunshine!

Hi Dean

Some on here will know Chastney’s better than me. They were based at Seaham but there was always two or three trailers parked at Sunderland abbatoir. Not sure whose meat they were taking where but there was two wholesalers based there:- Arnold Jewitt and Harry Dixon.

Merry Christmas one and all :D

Dean
Lovely message from Paul but most of the credit for this thread goes to him, Mark and certainly you for all your hard work and commitment keeping it running....
Paul is correct, there is a fabulous wealth of knowledge out there but those memories are all triggered, and thankfully shared, purely as a result of him and others standing out in rain and shine catching the snaps, having the expense of developing the film and storing the photo's (pre-digital era obviously), and also being generous enough to share them with us via you, Dean.
The time and effort you put into uploading and then responding to each and every comment is unbelievable and extraordinary, so all credit to you :)

It is a fabulous thread.

Thank you so much for all the great memories :D :D
Regards Paul

Life is far too short for all this [zb]! Stop and think. Then think again...
