Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Buzzer:
Stroker 156 DOT no doubt you would have known Mr Erskine from Wellow who specialised in JAP engine rebuilds and tuning from an old chicken shed both for speedway boys and the grass track men as well, he used to wear half spectacles and remember him looking over the top of these while milling on a lathe. I knew his three daughters and me mate married one of them, Marianne was her name .
Another name that springs to mind is Buzz Terry RIP, a farmer who lived opposite Giddings saw mill near Bartley, think he may have been into the speedway thing as I recall discussing this with him one day while we were out driving horses, do you recall him a real nice chap cheers Buzzer

Stroker 156 DOT:
Buzzer, Mike Erskine a very well educated gent and brilliant engineer, he manufactured the Erskine Staride frames that many top riders used.
Cant say I knew Buzz Terry although I was always loading bagged sawdust out of Giddings & South of England Timber Co. during the early sixties when working for W.Reeves of Collyhurst Manchester.
Regards, Stroker 156DOT

Ah, I spent a few hours in Mike’s workshop having a bit of machining done in the early days. I knew his lad Jon quite well too when he was ridding at Neath in '62. The Staride frame was very popular in the '50’s & funnily enough, was replaced by a frame made by Maurie Mattingly (Maurmat) in the '60’s. Buzzer: I knew Buzz Terry well, & his brother Malc, as they used to come over every week, along with Jack Valiss & a few others to help out in the pits when we opened Speedway here on the Island in 1996. most of them stopped coming after two or three seasons, but Buzz carried on, pretty much, up to his passing. Like you say a lovely fella & I was quite shocked at his demise.
Stroker: You forgot, arguably the best Southampton boy, Brian Crutcher :frowning: although, I suppose he was mainly Poole.
