OLD LIVESTOCK HAULIERS SHROPSHIRE

Remember when going scotch (if from the south), or going down to the smoke (if from the north), was long distance?
When Middle East work was readily available?.
When driving a 111 or F89 meant you were truly the king of the road?
Recall those companies long gone, where every day was an adventure?

What ever happened to those drivers you spent hours with.. where did they go? and recollect on those characters in the industry sadly no longer with us.
This forum is for us all to indulge in a little nostalgia and remember with rose coloured glasses how much better it was in the olden days

chepstowchap thanks for the photo as you say watty1 Devenports of Aston. When they sold the artic unit we used to pull the 36ft trailer for them on busy days, mostly Welshpool Mondays, Oswestry Wednesdays and Beaston Fridays.Usally sheep to Kingsley,Frodsham or Longmans at Stoke. There was also a place on the out skirts of Wigan and sometimes Bamberbridge. As i've said before I drove the f10 wag and drag for a while IIRC that was an ex A1 transport and Brian and Jack transferred the box's from the old f88.
As watty1 said any photos would be welcome

Hello Andrew
Do you still have the filling station? I remember back in the late 70's or early 80's when on the VSCC welsh trial which that year finished at Knighton leaving for the journey home about four in the afternoon, the plan being to fill up at your garage and arriving there to find it closed. So nothing for it but to knock at the house and say sorry, I guess it was your father who emerged, I remember he was a bit grumpy saying this had happened before and they only bought ten bobs worth, so anyway he filled us up, it would have been five or six gallons to top it. The car was a 1926 AC two seater with dicky, scuttle tank, gravity feed and the filler cap was on the dashboard!
I had a Commer two stroke for a while back in the 60's, it was belonged to Alf Wymmes of Bignal End another coal dealer, dad lent them one of our Bedfords for one of his sons to learn to drive on, must have been though more suitable, meanwhile I had the Commer. I remember going to Hem heath colliery with it driving along the A34 in the early hours to que up for loading, with my foot flat on the floor trying to get the boost gauge ever higher. The uniflow engine has no induction stroke and so needs to be pressurised to get the fuel in. I read somewhere that the engine was designed using German Junkers technology and was built by Tilling Stevens hence the TS designation and the 3 for the three cylinder configuration

Hi Jonto, unfortunatly I had to sell the petrol station about 10 yrs ago, there is now a tractor dealership operating from there, I assume that it brings in a lot more profit than running lorries and selling fuel ever used to. It was always a pet hate of dads to open up after closing time, but living on the site it was a drawback to the job, I remember one night opening up for the local ambulance to top up after a call, this was around 9pm and I never minded doing that as you never knew who or where it would be next called to, but when I was called on again at about 1am to fill it up gain, only to find that the bloody thing was still full, the crew had changed and instead of looking at the guage, or dipping the tank if they thought that the fuel gauge was faulty, the dipsticks prefered to call me out,the vehicle had only covered 1/2 a mile to the ambulance station and 1/2 a mile back down to the garage   To say that I wasnt a happy chappy would be an understatment, but they never made the same mistake again !!.
I didnt get to drive our Commer,it was sold long before I started driving, although I remember it well, you could always tell it coming miles away by its sound, both the engine and the brakes, the Albion being the first vehicle that I drove after my HGV test.
regards Andrew.

Still some lovely pictures coming through & thanks to those who post them. I was on a site recently where Chippenham Cattle market used to stand. It brought back a lot of memories. If only more of us had thought of taking the cameras back in them days.

Hello John,

Good to see you back 'in the saddle', hope you had a good holiday. The photos are as good as ever!

I particularly like this Bison of R.E. Bache & Jukes Ergo Marshal, my father ran tipper versions of both of these - takes me back to some happy days!

Incidentally Baches have relocated from Alveley to a farm site just off the A458, a couple of miles out of Bridgnorth, & just down the road from my better half's parents - it really is a small world some times!

Still hoping to see that Scania you mentioned... All the best!

Lovely picture of the F86, the Plant mentioned at Crick, would that have been Midland Meat Packers? That was a big firm, they must have had one of the highest throughputs of cattle in the country. More pictures please.

Shaw is Dave.I first remember them working out of Irish Sea Ferries Garston, very early seventies They used to take the box off a six wheeler Leyland when the cattle job was quiet and move Lancashire flats. One day on the way back from Manchester we came behind them,Les driving Bill shot gun. When we got to Middlewich they turned for Nantwich and the low bridge under the canel. Thinking they knew a way around we followed. As they droped down to the bridge the lights changed to green, Less hit the gas, BANG the old style container with the lifting eyes on top hit the bridge and under it went. Could have swore the truck lifted six inches when it come out the other end.Good job we had only a flat on. Anyway a couple of mile down the road there used to be a small cafe and we both pulled in. Dad said to Bill did you know you hit the bridge, He said what bridge we always come this way. :D :D

Hi Haydons sold to Ian Phillips, Baldwins Gate, he has my old Triumph TR4 1421VT restored and running. Mears are still going, another north staffs firm was Ron Marsh. I know Haydons have a photo album as I've seen it.

I can remember a chap, sadly no longer with us, that used to drive one of these old Atki's for Mears as well as working in their garage.
He told me that on one occasion in the late eighties he broke down on the M6 near Birmingham and used one of the Motorway emergency telephones to summon assistance. He gave the reg no to the person at the other end, then they asked him what make the vehicle was, when he replied Atkinson, the chap at the other end replied "Seddon Atkinson".
When the driver said no, Atkinson the chap on the other end said "Good grief".

John.
