HOVERINGHAM GRAVELS.

Remember when going scotch (if from the south), or going down to the smoke (if from the north), was long distance?
When Middle East work was readily available?.
When driving a 111 or F89 meant you were truly the king of the road?
Recall those companies long gone, where every day was an adventure?

What ever happened to those drivers you spent hours with.. where did they go? and recollect on those characters in the industry sadly no longer with us.
This forum is for us all to indulge in a little nostalgia and remember with rose coloured glasses how much better it was in the olden days

Cant remember its reg but drove round the yard in it the day it arrived.Perhaps someone can tell me where this one came from, and
also what it appears to be carrying.

This low loader was operated by Hoveringham Gravels Southern out of Denham plant workshops, it was driven by Peter???? who lived near me in Reading and could always be seen in the supermarket car park of a weekend, (unit only) taking his family shopping.
I think the picture was taken when it was on a job moving army tanks and guns from Bovingdon Dorset to the docks in London. I can remember being told that it should have run in convoy with the army Antars but Pete got fed up going at 20 MPH so he buggered off on his own route and was at the docks hours before the army convoy.

Anyone any thoughts on this ? Hoveringham Engineering Company was set up in 1957, but changed its name to Invicta Bridge & Engineering Ltd later on.....This bus picture was taken at Gash's (of Newark) Bus Depot in 1970, and shows one of the buses that was used to transport the workers into work, in the livery of Invicta, yet it has the colours of Tarmac Khaki green in its livery ? Why would this be at this early stage ? As Tarmac did not buy Hoveingham for another 12 years ? It looks as if the bus next to it, is a Hoveringham bus too ? As these were often purchased off Gash, and I guess also stored in their yard at weekends and nights ?

Hi,
I worked at Hoveringham during the early 70's and worked with John Barks during my time with Hoveringham.
I was very sorry to hear of his death as I spent many hours on the wrecker as drivers mate.
I am going to try and locate some lorry photos, mine appear to be missing at the moment!
I will post these photos taken this morning at the old Hoveringham/Tarmac Quarry at Blaxton, Doncaster.

Shire Oak Quarry was purchased by Hoveringham in 1963, previously owned by W.Northey of Erdington, who had owned it since 1932. Processing Sand & Gravel into the Birmingham and West Midlands Area since the 1920's, of course later owned by Tarmac, processing ceased in the late 1990's as reserves were exhausted.

Above picture of the Gravel Stocking Bin, part of the Linatex Concrete Sand Plant installed in 1974. The old entrance was closed off, when the site became a Landfill Site. This is how the old entrance looks today......Anyone with any more pictures ?

Its a shame they only had an offside window wiper, hardly any heating and very small mirrors. And they called them
good old days.In the winter my dad used to put a sack bag in the front of radiator grill to try to retain some heat
in the cab.If only he could see the lorries that i drive.Heated mirrors, night heaters, etc etc.We take it for granted, and
if the radio plays up call the vehicle a shed. And we call ourselves drivers.
