I think that the young drivers scheme is a great idea.
I think this because although im only 15 the scheme starts when you are 16,in time for when i leave school.All i want to do is become a lorry driver so the scheme is ideal to me,the thought of havin to wait untill im 21 is horrible.They train you so you become a professional,i have looked into it and from what i can gather is you start when your 16,get to drive a rigid at 19 then a couple mounths later you get to drive an artic.
As i have said hopefully i can do the young drivers scheme because i cant wait to drive a lorry. :smiley:

I believe that military drivers are age exempt and can drive, after the relevant training, all classes of vehicle. The DVLA web site mentions exceptions for military personnel. Does any one know if that is true or just another urban myth?

I am totally argee with MAD28 :smiley: , I am sixteen year old but I am sensible boy not like young yob or ned!!,

I am can’t waiting to driving!!! When I am 18 year old, I will go to Young Scheme driving!!!

This made to courage to young people because this moment shortage driver in UK

Best of luck Mad28 and Betz. This young driver scheme is a good one. Now all they need to do is work on retaining drivers in the face of hours and pay problems, and we’re on the way towards being sorted out.

Like you said you still have to pass the relevant tests but you can drive any class vehicle at 17 in the forces as far as im aware.

I totally agree,im am too a sensible boy and also cant wait to drive a lorry,and you still have to go through all the proper proceders,so you still are a professional driver,when you have taken your test.
Does age really matter?Me and a Betz cant wait to drive a lorry so the young drivers scheme is a brilliant idea,and we are mature enough to drive a lorry. :smiley:

Well, all the very best to both of you then.

Thats exactly how I was when I decided to drive a truck, and although obviously after 17 years the novelty has worn off, I couldnt imagine myself doing anything else.

its sad to say but i knew at 13 what i wanted to do now im 2* years old have driven most things and worked in a variety of industries through driving man talk about sad i need to get a life

I reckon it’s all about dedication to the industry; I would have jumped at the chance to get behind the wheel at eighteen, but had to sit it out to my 21st birthday. I was however shunting from the age of sixteen in the yard tug which put me well ahead of the game when it came round to learning proper. There are far too many people in our industry nowadays who are just in it for the crack. I had an ambition as a little lad to drive big trucks like my father and realised my dream. So good luck to all the lads and lasses embarking on the young driver scheme, I can only say how jealous of the system I am. Dedicated members to the transport industry should be encouraged :laughing:

The Army allows drivers of 18 years of age to drive all catorgorities of licence. This means a young soldier male or femail can drive there latest tank transporter complete with 50 ton tank. If they are in Germany they can drive the afore mentioned at 18 whilst on duty but they are not allowed to drive a car on a civilian licence untill they are 21.
