Dubious eh?
So now you’re refuting that you can virtually cover all blind spots (or at least enough of them) in the way I state, to successfully negotiate a roundabout are you?
I would have thought that all you top guys in the Advanced drivers club would agree with me tbh…, or maybe me being an amateur in comparison, I’ve got that one way off eh?
Not in the slightest. If you think you can move back safely from right to left using a kerb mirror it just proves you are maybe not a good as you think you are?
Now come on Jake, mate, I’m dissapointed, even a man of your (self confessed) superior knowledge, can surely admit he’s wrong if only just for once on here, instead of copping out by selectively quoting my points just to make one of your own.
The kerb mirror is used in conjunction and in concurrence with the 3 other facilities available to me, as (I thought) clearly stated …and that you well know.
If you are unable to use these methods yourself without fearing a full on ■■■■ up scenario, then maybe also you are not as good as you think you are…perish that thought eh?
I think you are going round in circles and getting a little confused.
My point is if you use the right hand lane to turn right at certain roundabouts it is almost impossible to get a clear view when moving left to exit and that’s why there were new methods initiated.
I take it you don’t keep up with current versions of road safety for commercial vehicles due to many changing
aspects of traffic and road systems since the 70s.
Carry on as normal because you probably always will.

Thanks
Like you say…‘‘versions’’ yours and theirs are different to mine.
Who’s to say whose ‘‘version’’ is the correct one or the wrong one. Just because something comes from an official body does not say it is gospel. , and so what if it’s been around since the 70s, so have The Stones,.and they still work no matter how old they are.
I could become some kind of road safety official (or impresario such as yourself ) , and say mine is right, where as others would disagree.
It works for me, and has done for years, so why mend something that is not broken, thats the way I see it.
I have to agree there is not really any blind spots anymore, I find there is a few drivers who can not concentrate or take in what is happening around them when they are flat out thinking they are the best, I always suggest to
these special ones to slow down & take on board what is happening all around them, if a car, cyclist or person suddenly disappears from vision there is a good chance they have done or doing something really silly. Most good
drivers know what the clown is going to do & will take action to stop them putting themselves at risk.

All I am saying is if we as lorry drivers stuck to using the same methods car drivers may be a little less confused than they are now.
Many on here regularly criticise car drivers but when one wagon does one thing then the next does another its not surprising they have a low opinion of our driving.
And that statement can and does apply to the much more numerous cars on the road than trucks.
Cars cause more issues than us trucks at junction/ roundabouts or for that matter any part of the road ! Which is why we have to think for them at times !!

Probably true considering there are far more cars than trucks on the roads but you do sound a little biased. I hate to tell you but there are good and bad car drivers and good and bad truck drivers.
And we see very poor driving from each party but we as professionals should help dopey car drivers out but I hate to say I see more aggression towards car drivers than help.
Don’t get me wrong some car drivers can be just as aggressive.
It’s all about attitude and while we have this THEM and US attitude nothing will improve.

Thanks snowman, at least you have the courage to explain what you do! As any decent driver knows you need to keep learning but some seem stuck in a rut believing their methods are correct because they have been doing the same thing for years.
Yes Juddian, as I said the other day I believed it was in the HC although someone said it was not but I can’t be bothered to check. It is certainly in other driving manuals.
Does it really matter if it is there are not? Most ignore a lot of whats in it anyway and do it their own way.
As I said no wonder the roads are such a shambles when some won’t change because they do not agree believing their way is better. Maybe yourself included.
Sad state of affairs.
Well as you’ve included me as one of the wrong uns, here’s my method for you to take issue with.
We’ll assume for this that all roundabouts have 4 exits, we’ll also assume the roundabout is wide enough to allow cars and vans at least to be alongside you whenever possible on said island, we all know there are some islands where it’s not advisable to have cars alongside during the negotiation, but for the purposes of this discussion we’ll assume a decent sized road not requiring the lorry driver to take part of the other lane out in order to stop people from putting themselves in harms way, i’m not even considering the bone heads in parcel type artics who think their vehicles take as much road space up as the berlingo van which was the largest vehicle they drove till 5 minutes ago.
1.Two lanes approaching r’bout, i’m turning right onto a single carriageway road, the major road goes straight ahead, i indicate right and get in the RH lane when possible, indicating right until the correct obvious moment.
Two lanes approach, i’m turning right onto a dual carriagway which is the continuation of the major route i am approaching on, in most cases its accepted by everyone that both lanes can be used for this, so to allow faster vehicle to make normal progress i approach in the LH lane indicating right and stay in that lane all the way around, only cancelling indicator as i go past the straight ahead exit exiting into the left hand lane.
Two lane approach, i’m going straight ahead exiting into single lane, left hand lane all the way the only indication used is LH indicator as i pass the left turn.
Two lane approach, two lane exit, more care needed here due to drivers of Audis in particular being unable to keep within their lane, presumably the car too big for them to cope with, so left lane all the way through, again indicating only left only after passing the left exit.
Nit pick that, a system which almost every British commercial driver practices in Britain, and tell us what we should be doing instead.
Exactly how roundabouts should be negotiated Juddian.
Juddian:
I thought that Daftvader, but it would appear we have it all wrong
No , not all Juddian, not those that keep up with modern legislation and times which actually is safer in some caees but not all I grant you. It’a great pity more drivers don’t keep learning after they pass their test.
Been doing it for years, therefore it must be right because I have never has an accident attitude!

Attitude ? (That’s rich btw )
OR
A relavance to the discussion, and a personally accurate point made, in order to point out, and to justify carrying on with the same past proven sucessful practice and procedure.
Bit of advice Jake take it or leave it…
Just because YOU disagree with something does not necessarily mean that YOU are ALWAYS right, and that the other guy i(and every ■■■■ else for that matter ) is automatically wrong because of that…

On a nice big roudabout, with clear markings that Juddian first hypothesized, yes, stick to the marked lanes.
On lesser roundabouts where idiots want to overtake, keep them in sight.
Let them overtake, if they must, but ensure they do it where you see them . Not in the blind spot behind the headboard as you turn.
Even in Juddian’s example, as we go past the first exits, and we are near the centre of the roundabout, idiots can slip on and run beside the trailer. We will only see them as we straighten out and bear left to exit.
Yes, they are at fault, not us, but the potential for accidents is there.
Thank goodness someone understands the point I was trying to make and realises the potential for accidents doing it the old fashioned way.
Its really best to keep up with the times.
All these things are usually well thought out before being implemented.
of course we will always get the stubborn ones who know better.
I’ve always found that straddling the white lines blocking anyone from passing helps. Especially if you make it look like you’re a new driver and really struggling to get round. A cheery “thank you” wave to everyone you’ve held up as they pass diffuses any road rage.

Well, finally the penny has dropped, that jakethesnake must be another revisit with a new name of one the many previous trolls that have infested this place.
No one could be quite so obtuse or fail to grasp anything and everything quite so often unless deliberate.
No one else could fail to realise that Franglais was endorsing the reasonable and accepted roundabout theory, but sensibly pointing out that some others drivers, mainly pointy shoe’d gelled haired and other idiots in cars and the standard nut case in a white’ish van, could well be trying to undertake you even if you are in a lane that is effectively being closed off by the tractor unit already, he sensibly pointed out that whilst turning right the nearside of the trailer would be blind until straightening up, and to be on the lookout for people dtermined to have their daily accident.
Idiots on the road is hardly a new thing by the way, and nor do we have to be thankful to some civil servant for coming up with a new way of approaching roundabouts, because proper drivers have been adapting to changing road layouts and generally deteriorating driving skills ever since they started driving.
Quite why i am rising to the bait of yet another trolling effort i do not know, thankfully now the penny has dropped this will be the very last time

I had a wave from a driver last week. He didn’t seem too cheerful though, maybe his thumb and other 3 fingers were only recently amputated?

Maybe it’s this diabetes epidemic, but I’ve noticed finger amputation has become rather popular lately.
