Middle peak? I was led to believe it was Backdale quarry at Cawder, the one they got the stone from when it was still running in the late 70s and 80s.
Do you mean Halldale ,Backdale is at Hassop I think .

That’s the one Dan, Hall Dale. We look across at that from our house and it seems strange that 30 + years ago when we moved here it was still working and we had dust on our windows after blasting, nowadays you can hardly see the quarry for trees and foilage and visitors don’t realise that it was once a working quarry!
Pete.
That’s right mate, always get mixed up between the two for some reason.
And to Pete; what year did the quarry finally close? A few years ago while the weighbridge was still in situ at the entrance to Cawder, I managed to find some old discarded tickets which were dated July 1984. I don’t think there was much after this date.
And the crossover from the quarries over the narrow single track public road, what was on the sign to the right that’s still there albeit just the frame? The one that’s to the side of the boulders blocking access.
Apologies for the thread swerve BTW.
Bonkey, I think 1984 sounds about right. It was still operating in a small way in '82 when we moved here. Not sure what the sign reads, at a guess it will be something along the lines of “Anyone trespassing past this point will have two choices, either go to jail (best option) OR get signed up as a contract haulier, pay US for YOUR lorry and then, when we have shafted you enough, and chopped your rates to nothing, we will buy it back from you for a pittance and sell it on to some other poor sap”. Jail would be the easier option! Of course I MAY be wrong!
Pete.
I squeezed my car in to Halldale in about. 95 ,I also would rally around in Cawdor .
Cheers for the replies, Pete’s as always entertaining! there’s a tarmaced square up in Halldale with a H on it. Anyone know what this was for?
Sorry for the Qs, but if you don’t ask, you’ll never know!

Probably for the helicopter landing pad, the Tarmac offices were next to the quarry on Snitterton Road? Privately owned now I believe. Or it could have been where they once hung the bodies of Contract Haulier’s who dared to question the operating methods!
Pete.
