Would you recommend driving to somebody?

robroy:
My kids have all came with me in the past, 2 girls 2 boys.
My eldest lad wanted to drive, despite me trying to talk him out of it.
He failed his Class 3 about 5 yrs ago (or whatever tf they call it now) I can’t say I was dissapointed. He could not afford to carry on. Me being cruel to be kind would not loan him the cash for it. I don’t usually stand in their way, but I had his best interests in mind.

He concentrated instead on his mechanic/fitter training, he is now Head tech at a Ford dealership at 27, earning a hell of a lot more than he would driving a [zb] truck…and than me now, …and a lot less hours for it.
My other 3 did not pursue a driving career I’m glad to say, and all are doing well in their jobs.

nice one

a few people have asked me about it and I have allways replied that if you can get a good job then yes otherwise don’t bother as most employers will take the pxxs,or I say no to the younger generation and say find a job that pays better with less hours, but as I have got older I would never recommend this job to anyone, young or old

I’ve done a couple of jobs; military, retail, web development ($150k per year), computer programming, ran my own company, stock control (provisioning and auditing) and abbatoir work. HGV is the best for me, I love it here. I’ll be here til I die.
I’d recommend it.

Used to be a crap job with good money…now the moneys gone.

Wouldn’t recommend it now. Not in this country anyway - roads are so crowded and the ‘targets’ seem to becoming unreachable unless you…

And the way in general this country’s going…■■?

Not looking forward to my kids growing up and then finding ‘any’ job ATM…

Yes, if they’re happy with their own company and have a thick, thick skin and are prepared for loooooooong hours.

switchlogic:
Yes, absolutely. It’s all about the right attitude, that’s all. It’s a great job if you approach it from the right angle

Luke’s hit the nail on the head.

I’ve been through a despondency stage last 2 months after redundancy.

Suddenly changed my attitude last week and a lot of big differences and significant changes have occurred since that change in my own attitude this Monday.

Would I recommend it…why not if you like it, you’ll end up never being able to leave. If you don’t carry on with your search.

In my eyes it beat my previous careers in surveying and engineering. In someone else’s eyes lorry driving ■■■■■.

Horses for courses

Talked both of my sons out of following me into driving, and anyone that askes I try to dissuade them. I missed out on a lot of things when my kids were growing up and that is never worth any amount of money.

Meanwhile ironically there were plenty of younger single blokes looking for distance work who were shut out because the older family ones preferred that to the local home every day jobs that we were/are lumbered with. :unamused: Having said that even reasonable driving job hours combined with commuting can be worse regards quality time at home than a good well rotored distance type job.Realistically to make the job family friendly needs four on four off commuting type jobs or something like 2-4 weeks on 1-2 weeks off for distance/tramping.On that note drivers only have themselves to blame for accepting zb shift patterns and non existent rotas.
