Working for agencies how does it work?

Ok, going to try act all sensible now, this has gone on too long.

I am a career agency muppet, been Limited company since long before it became the “in” thing to do. I do it because I enjoy the freedoms it allows along with the money that I can earn doing it the way I do. Not everybody operates in the same manner and I generally try hard not to promote it as it would only undermine the success I enjoy.

I can and regularly do take a large portion of abuse because I am an agency driver, but that abuse is only on forums and not in real life. In my normal place of haunting they know who I am and what I can do. They know I look after the motors and regularly ask if I can have their motor should they be on holiday but that’s enough bragging.

Sadly for Robroy I am not wet behind the ears and started out in the industry just as curtain siders were being introduced so roping and sheeting was the norm. That should give a clue as to how long I’ve been at it.

I took offence at people telling us agency drivers how it is when they clearly have no idea or limited knowledge which tends to be the case as mentioned earlier. A driver has a week of an agency taking the proverbial out of them and it puts them off for life. Social media has certainly helped the agency bashers get the point across and to a large degree I agree with them. Most agencies are parasites whose every word should be regarded as a lie BUT and it is a big but, no not an arse but a but, if you get about a bit and stand up for yourself then you maybe just can make it work.

Many blame the industries woes on agencies but agencies would not be so successful if transport companies invested in their workforce. Think back to how many agencies were around when you used to be allowed to take your kids to work with you and the gaffer would set on a boy and put then through their class one. These lads were brought up in the yard and once on the road could hold their own from day one. Agencies did not exist.

Employers of today do not want to invest a penny in their staff and expect everyone to come to them fully trained and able to do the job, just look at job adverts now, most say " must have current dcpc". That is because they do not want to have to pay for it. The industry is and always will be a victim of its own greed and stupidity.

I am not defending agencies in any way, it is the agency drivers who I will defend or at least the ones who stand out for all the right reasons. The scum I will mock with the rest of you and I really do hate them because they tarnish the name of all the decent guys out there who actually give a ■■■■ but alas this could be said of many full time employees too but they never seem to get much of a kicking for it.

Robroy, I’ll agree to disagree with you if you like, if only to bring this topic to a close but please feel free to get in touch should you wish to know anything about being self employed on the agency circuit. To add, I do some direct work too but tend to stay where the regular work is for obvious reasons.

Evil8Beezle:
My agencies margin on me is £2 an hour.
I’ve seen the agency spreadsheet, and also had that charge rate confirmed by my TM.
End of…

to be fair this is about right .73p an hour is just wrong and shows why rates wont increase, these are the agencies who I cant stand they competition or not work on the I will undercut the competitor rather than focus on I have good lads and my rates are this.

i also love on here how people assume that your a know it all if you contribute to an argument or discussion, agency or full time what does it matter? what suits me wont suit someone else why name call? what does it matter if you have a degree and driver or not? some of the best drivers i have ever met could hardly read or write but by god could they drive and plan their days far better than others who were ‘more intellectual’ shall we say. its lorry/hgv/truck driving.

‘different strokes for different folks’ but at the end of the day we’re all just drivers.

I would answer that by saying it’s a pity you didn’t take your ‘acting sensible’ route from the start.

You have difficulty in seperating and understanding
ABUSE ie.‘All agency drivers are ■■■■■ and I hate the ■■■■■■■■■ …

and
BANTER. ie ’ All agency drivers drive with hi viz, a carrier bag, earpiece and limp’ :bulb: :bulb:

I used the latter rather than the former, but you repeatedly came back with childish insults …like thick and stupid, because I questioned your account of how much an agency creams off a driver.
I can live with that, it’s water off a ducks back mate.
However insulting me by labelling me as a wifebeater :open_mouth: ( 3 steps off a ■■■■■■ paedo in my book :smiling_imp: ) over something so trivial prevents me from agreeing with you to do anything !

I’m thinking that maybe you aint man enough to offer some kind of apology, so leave it at that.

Late to the party… hopefully not too late

I never called you a wife beater robroy so I have nothing to apologise for.
Please re read the sentence and the context in which it was written.

Truckbling:
beat up his wife because he does not like what I am typing? so what!

.

What is that calling me then? A ■■■■■■ morris dancer.
That insinuates that I would be capable, that is enough for me.

Anyway just forget it mate, I don’t even know why I’m getting so ■■■■■■ about it, you aint worth the ■■■■■■ bother.

So the insults about me being an agency limping scumbag are genuine? :open_mouth:

I’m so hurt, I think I’ll cry… :unamused:

Now why are my tissues always at the bottom of my Lidi’s carrier bag? :grimacing:

robroy:
I don’t even know why I’m getting so ■■■■■■ about it…

You need to let off some steam robroy. Go and kick the ■■■■ out of your wife or something.

Look at the positives. At least you ain’t no Morris Dancer.

Contraflow:

■■■■ off

Pat Hasler:
“How does it work ?”
Easy… You are at their beck and call, they send you to work hard for poor wages and conditions and make a fortune out of you by charging the company they send you to at least twice what you get paid, then the owners enjoy their 8 weeks of holiday time at their villas in the Med.
DON’T WORK FOR AGENCIES.

Work Hard, Poor Wages and Conditions… I thought you were writing about Canadian drivers for a moment there Pat!..

Then I realised you were meaning me as the business owner! (I only managed 2 weeks in Mallorca this year though)

The modern day logistics industry needs both employees and support drivers to survive now days.

I think the days of the old fashioned ‘Employment Agency’ is rapidly diminishing, with many businesses now outsourcing their ‘continious’ HGV driver requirments from businesses (like mine) who specialise in finding the best drivers for the job, paying them well and providing the drivers with specialist skill set training and continous support. (Wether they are new to the haulage industry or ‘old hands’ like yourself Pat.)

Mixed response there I work full time at the min near Castleford I live near Sherburn in elmet northyorkshire and was offered to work for xpo and Dhl in Sherburn I was just woundering what the earning potential of been a ltd driver is? And the pros and cons.

Only tried that once, fell off the bonnet, hit me head on the bumper.
