Working agency

dozy:
I’m with the op , they can stuff there hours notice of work , my work is 3/4 weeks in advance , sounds like 99 % on this thread need to find themselves a decent agency !!!

One doesn’t usually find the red and the blue in the same sentence of course, anymore than the same parliamentary coalition…

On a regular basis, the agency I’m with send out start times for example
Txt at 08:00am for an 11:00am start 3hrs notice
Am I wrong in thinking the rules are they must give you 9hrs minimum notice before your shift begins?

I’m not on the agency at the moment but when I was I told them I would only do work for which I had been booked the day before.

Obviously it all depends on how much you need the money.

From my…

Own experience which spans nearly 20 years now as an agency man Ltd status and PAYE. When I first started they were shocking! Lied to about the work, the rate and frequently bumped on payday. I’ve had three successful small claims court cases about non-payment and had head of finance department for a multi-million pound operation tell me on the phone, ‘it’s a new wages team and you can’t expect them to hit the ground running can you’. There were exceptions that include, an agency that paid me for eight hours if I got cancelled and another agency (that unsurprisingly went out of business) that paid me to sit on my arse all week for jobs that never materialised.

But, I’ve found over the last five years or so, a more professional approach from the one I currently do assignments for. Maybe they’ve made so much money by robbing drivers and minions over the last decade or so that they can afford to go more legit now. I do the shifts I want to do and get the going rate for my efforts. I’m paid correctly and on time every month. I get paid holiday money which isn’t ‘rolled up’ or hidden in other ways and I’m offered bonus money for doing shifts at short notice.

A great deal of it is down to the luck of the draw as to who’s operating where you live or where you want to work. I got lucky.

I’ve found that “last minute shifts” when taken, are also the ones that tend to have problems with being paid the correct amount/on time. Strangely, I’ve never been paid over in my life, by an agency, although it did happen a few times when I was full time at different places…
