Sound like wise words from a wise man, hindsight is a marvellous thing and what your dad says certainly seems to ring true here, growing up my dad did the same worked all hours in the coal mines and I mean all hours in 1993 when he finished he was working Tues - Fri 0200 - 1400 then going back in on nights Friday and doing 2100 - 1400, back in Saturday night 2100 - 1400 then Sunday he did 2100 -1400 week in week out apart from our 2 week holiday in summer. I hated not seeing my dad and to be honest he was pretty much a stranger to me allbeit a stranger whom I love and am proud of, so what do i do go into the haulage industry working nights 71hrs then 84hrs (lots of POA and breaks) my daughters moan all the time and rightly so maybe its a viscious circle but it certainly does not only appliy to that generation Juddian as I for one can vouch for
Thats the downside NN, if you can call it that, instilled in me from a small child was seeing my dad, whatever the weather however ill he might be, get up early have a wash and shave in the Belfast sink and some breaky cooked by his fine wife and my dear long gone mother…then he went to work come hell or high water.
Luckily he didn’t have to work the cruel hours your father did, but being a head gardener in private service meant he was always on duty as such so the hours were long at times, fortunately we were lucky to live in some wonderful country places but always in tied cottages and he was respected in his field and never out of work.
That sense of duty thing is instilled in children from the age of short trousers, i count myself lucky to have had such a loving and secure home, money was tight but they did the best they could…the trouble these days is that they are millions of children who don’t have those wonderful real men role models in their lives and we see the results every day.
I’ve been like you and worked me socks off over the years (had no choice, me dad would have turned in his grave if i’d not provided, that ring a bell?), luckily i had a couple of good breaks and managed to get on well paid work in me 30’s, bloody hard work and long hours the order of the day.
I packed in the car transporters about 4 years ago, my wife (salt of the earth Latin and highly recommended…
) told me she didn’t want to be the richest widow in the town and wanted me to pack it in.
She was right, we’d paid for the house and didn’t owe a bean, so i packed in the job and went on the agency for around 18 months till i happened by pure luck on my present job on tanks, which whilst paying very well i only work around 45 hours a week on a shift pattern that suits us.
Having got out of the grinding hours of the transporters and having time to peruse forums like this, i’m truly shocked at how bad the money is generally on normal haulage work, obviously it varies area wise…to be fair the tranporter work is seriously hard graft but on the right company the money can be very good.
We can only play the cards we’ve been dealt, and i expect most of us have become our fathers over time warts and all, i hope i have.
