Sorry Rog, is it ADSL or cable you have? *(See as Virgin is one great big massive group now)
You can use what you like. You may find it easier to get an all-in-one rather than a simple wired router. First thing I did when I joined Virgin was lob the supplied Thomson SpeedTouch 330 modem in the bottom of the drawer. Only accepted it as it was gratis. Still around here somewhere. I prefer wifi as it means everyone in the house can use their laptop (multiple occupancy) and I can use my internet radio to listen the BBC.
But then again it’s probably one of those fancy-schamcy weird boxes that glow in the dark or summat? Progress my arse.
Any chance of a picture of what you have from Virgin?

Yes Rog those basic ADSL modems give you the option to EITHER use the ethernet or usb sockets on them, not both.
Chuck it in the bin - sorry, no can do anymore / WEEE directive put it on your local FreeCycle.
One wired (or wireless) ADSL router is what you want. Usually they have 4 ethernet ports on the back (and that includes the wireless ones - they have four wired ports on the back too and you can disable the wireless on them anyway). I’d be surprised if you couldn’t blag one for nowt. Ten-a-penny, so they are.
Modem supplied by Virgin so cannot discard
I intend to use ethernet lead from Virgin modem to router and then do 2 ethernet cables from the router to 2 computer home stations
same set up as me,virgin modem and my own wireless router with 4 ethernet out sockets at the rear and 1 in socket. the whole setup works a treat for me so i must have been lucky when i set it all up lol im sat in back garden now typing this
ROG:
Cable -Well, there is a wire that eminates from the outside of my house and appears on the inside - it’s one of the blue modems with the flashing LEDs
Now Rog, you’re making it difficult. I take it you mean one of these NTL things■■?
If it is, then forget the ADSL bit, you get the other thingy, Cable Broadband router wotsit.

does your PC have wireless on it?
how long have you been with virgin?
do you want to pc and laptop to “talk” to each other to share files and printers?
i had one of those virgin modems and wanted wireless, and now have it, so i may be able to help you out!

No wireless
6 years - I think
PC to PC not necessary - just want internet on both using ethernet cable
ring virgin and tell them sky have just offered you the same package for £10 less but with a wireless router (i did this and got £12 off the bill and a free wireless router) it only takes about a week to turn up.

more reason to do above!

you can plug the PC into the router and have the laptop on wireless, very easy to do they even send you a set up disk to do it all, its a piece of wee wee. dial 150 from your phone and select that you are thinking of leaving them. as soon as you say that they tend to try to give you as much as possible

but can I do the ethernet link to both PCs if I get the ethernet router and use it with my current modem
yes you can its similar to a splitter but as Giblsa said get the kit of virgin and within 1/2 hour you will be using the laptop wirelessly. the set up disc does most of the work for you

err - I don’t have a laptop
right i thought that is what you was on about sorry
so its 2 desk top pc’s you want to get on internet.
then the easiest solution is a splitter after your virgin router, so 1 cable into router 1 cable out going to ethernet splitter the 2 or more cables to the desk top
otherwise you will have to buy a wireless adapter for 1 of your computers and thats is a little more expensive than a splitter.
funny this but im down your way monday and have a splitter if you want to try it out ,im at meridian business park monday afternoon.
you have a pm
why would you want the ethernet cables there if you can have the wireless network and share files exactly the same as with a cable? i am guessing you want this of course?
if you want to link 2 pcs or laptop and pc together with ethernet you would need a cross over cable which would go into your ethernet port where the virgin cable goes in so you either link the pc and laptop and cant go on t’internet or vicky verky!
get wireless it is a lot less hassle than having wires everywhere. all you need is another mains plug socket and you are sorted, everything else is provided for you. trust me Rog the set up is easy, my wife did ours and when it comes to setting computers and networks up she isnt the worlds greatest but will have a go and managed it with no trouble at all!
around my area there is periodic interference as my old neighbour, a computer expert, found out - we think it comes from a radio ham but cannot say for sure ethernet works fine for me
Do not use USB to connect, to much hassle and unreliable.
Ethernet connection is 100% secure, wireless connections can be hacked
If both PC’s are located such that they can easily be connected by ethernet, then that’s the way to go. To connect more than one PC (or laptop) you will need an ethernet switch. £11.62 from PC world.
