I’m not one for all that breaker breaker copy 10-4 ■■■■. Ive been thinking of going back to stinger/magmount but the stingers break easy and like you said its scruffy looking. A lot of modern cbs dont last long either…been through 3 in 12 years.

Is it me or do cbs not have the range they used to? Even the drivers who work with me that spend ages setting their swr in don’t get out very far. I’m also getting peed off with the foreign crap that’s always on around Oxfordshire. We moved from 34 to 36 and can still hear their gibberish. Our drivers are also very snobby, and wont go on the same channels as other local tipper companies are on (I love it when they see me on the mic but cant hear anything, they fiddle with their radios and wave their mic at me for a response  )

Not you or the radios, its band conditions.
As the ionosphere does its thing (skip) the noise floor of the band comes up which means weaker “groundwave” stations get buried.
One of the biggest pains in the rear on both Chip Buttie and the ten metre Ham bands are Russian taxis loving called “Olga from the Volga”.
At the time I got my Ham Licence (1980) when CB broke big it was also sunspot maximum and during the daytime, 3 miles was about top whack.
Try again at night when the ionosphere has shut down and you will see what I mean.

Yes the CB lingo is naff IMHO

GB3CF which used to be called the ‘all England repeater’ apparently, is a common one for me, plus GB3TA when I can, but I can’t fit anything to the truck, even the barcode scanners we use are via ciggy sockets! And the trucks change daily and there are 3 drivers a day.

I’ve got a Yaesu FT8800 and some HTs but can’t afford a HF rig just yet…

Hello all, I have my Intermediate licence and was thinking of buying a handheld ham radio to use in the truck, can anybody suggest any that are worth a look?

Well you could try the FT7800. It is a bit better than the 8800 because it has the lit up buttons which help in the dark but the 8800 is dual band dual watch whilst the 7800 is single watch dual band.

These days you may wish to consider the Kenwood 710 as you can set it up on APRS so people can see you on aprs.fi too. Helpful for your wife/gf to keep track of you, but most people owuld think that is too restrictive…

www.eham.net for reviews and stuff.

Thanks will have a read.

Ok so how do I get a kit for VHF that I can keep mobile? (sometimes two different motors a day) and how do I get my license, what’s it going to cost?

Looking here would be a good start:

And the big decider for me, do you have to use that ruddy identifier number thing? Why can’t I just be Alex J from Eastbourne? is it some kind of willy waving contest? Lower the number the older you are and the bigger your coax or something?

I use the CB quite a bit around europe, when I’m on 19 on FM I keep hearing some woman speaking in something like polish? is that skip?
and when we run on 11 FM as a “company” channel we always hear some blokes in the US of A :open_mouth:
today I overtook a UK plated scania on the A2 from zaragoza to madrid and I tried calling him to advise him on the traffic jam ahead but he wasn’t on, more people should use them i think

well I can chat to my mate in Bromsgrove when I’m on the south coast and most of Wales
on 10m…most morning I chat to down under, then in the afternoon it’s time for the
USA. All I have got is 857D and the good old DV27 work’s very well for me!!!
And VHF If you are up & down the A14 lots, you have GB3EA GB3PO but on UHF GB3EZ
has a HUGE coverage.

Just go along and see what it’s about, after all, it’s not going to cost you anything to ask, and if they ask where you got their info from, then tell them the Chairman of Wakefield and District Radio Society got the info from the region 10 website of the RSGB.

And the identifier you mention, well if you look at it like this: A fingerprint is unique to you as an individual, your callsign is the same thing and is an Ofcom requirement. I have had many many people say basically the same thing as yourself, and had reservations about becoming a ham, but believe me, once they’ve got the foundation licence, they then go on to enjoy what they had misconceptions about.

Might be a daft question but if we switched to Euro channels will that improve reception?

Don’t the Polish use some channels that are just off frequency to ours and the Euro ones ?

Still use CB and have been for over 30 years. You will hear people from all sorts of countries coming through when there is skip around. This time of year you can hear Americans coming through on AM on the old FCC frequencies.

Glad it’s not just me with the Polish bird. Kept hearing her faintly along the M4 last week. Had to keep double-checking I hadn’t knocked myself onto AM!
