Yes rob I still take my breaks, do I adjust my breaks to help the gaffer out? Bet your ■■■ I do. The more money he makes, the safer my job is, and more he can pay me too…
But if I do a long stint to help the company out, do I feel guilty for taking a bit of extra break somewhere else? Nope! I’ll happily take it with a clear conscience.

I’d have preferred it if they’d have kept the old rules of being able to split it in to three 15s!..sent using my Nokia 3310 via tapatalk
ROG:
Under the old rules a driver could do 1 min of driving - take 30 min break - then do 4 hr 29 min driving - take 15 min break - then do 4 hr 30 min driving
That was 8 hr 59 min driving with only a 15 min break
my preferred choice. although T’ was handy doing three 15 mins ( cup of tea, whilst forky was unloading you. )
Used to work with a smart article who used to time 22.5 mins precisely for two breaks back in the day on anologue, perfectly legal.

+1…SEEMS REASONABLE…with nobody taking the pee…take your breaks when it suits you,do your job and be flexible.
or…be a Tosco type plobber jobsworth and be the epitome of your classic british mindset worker…each to their own.
I like working for cowboys and wiring it to suit myself.
Trouble:
No, Im sure theres no one out there who`d dream of putting it on rest while doing other duties
On that note however, I’ve seen a recent increase in VOSA vans sitting around industrial estates and even coming into company premises while people are tipping which makes me wonder if their next move will be randomly checking on peoples tacho status. Would have all the grief of arguing whether sitting eating while on a bay is strictly “rest”.
As for the 15 >30 min rule, it’s a right pain on multidrop as many places don’t give quite enough time for a full 30 before they want you to move and then sit there again for another 25 while someone counts your goods…so I’ve heard.

It doesn’t have to be “rest” - just a break from working/driving. Under the drivers’ hours legislation, Rest and Break are different animals.
T he people who thought of it do not drive trucks .They work …sorry I mean sit in an office all day with nothing constructive to do,they are close to a canteen ,toilets ect start at nine finish at four thirty have a nice pension and holidays ,as for me I used to have thirty minutes first at around eight thirty am when traffic is heavy then fifteens through out the day spot on for me until bird brain fixed it for me

but, herein lies the problem. SAME SYMBOL IS USED FOR BOTH.
When I started driving here I was shocked that a driver could actually drive for 11 hours without a break I of course refused and when stopped by DOT if they saw you had driven more than 4.5 hours without stopping they would have a fit. Then they changed the law and you must have 30 minutes within 8 hours … Still shocking
I refuse to drive more than 4.5 hours without a break and my company know that and respect it.
In a nutshell its to stamp out Drivers who stop to have a hearty breakfast for 30 minutes after an hour of starting work and making it last all day til the end of shift apart from a 15 minute break in between to grab a quick cuppa and go to the toilet.

Imagine how many derv islands at fuel stations would be ■■■■■■■ with truckers sitting on them for 15 minutes at a time, poncing about in the shop for ages and having a number two - just to make sure it doesn’t look like they’re trying to take a crafty 15 there?

This is the problem I am all for a fair days work but when one can drive for 8.30 without a rest people do it. If there were no rules well…people like me are worse off .the take a sledge hammer to crack a nut.
I think certain drivers just need protecting from themselves. I used to work with a driver who would run to and from office with his paperwork he would even eat a meal while driving. He was always on the edge of a nervous breakdown.
The thing was that he done exactly the same job as me who was a decent worker but took breaks etc.
This man asked me to check his tacho charts one day and he had done 17 days straight work because he couldn’t say no to the agency.
So sometimes a higher power just has to annoy some people to protect others.
