Why Euro work?

I missed that wheelnut  its the parking area at Marsan on the Vannes to Nantes road with night time security as well, :open_mouth:
Poofs, Prossies and police patrols, so draw your curtains tight when you park up, :open_mouth:
Keeps the fuel thiefs away.

In the mid 80s when I started driving, UK work was very different to what we have now, there were still cafes & town center lorry parks about, traffic volumes were a lot lower than today (London-Manchester-London was an easyish days work) all in all it weren’t a bad job & I enjoyed it, then one day I got back to yard & was asked if I fancied a run over to Belgium, well I didn’t need asking twice & off I went on my 1st trip, I remember going to Dover & lining up with all the other lorries, doing customs & getting on the boat, it was a different world & I was hooked, it then became a regular job, Belgium & Holland at first, then as we started doing more & more I went all over the place, after a couple of years I had been all over Europe & Scandinavia, even the out of the way places like Andorra, Lichenstein, Sicily & Sardinia, I moved around to a few different jobs, but always doing continental, I enjoyed the lifestyle, even though there were plenty of not so good times, being weekended in the middle of nowhere, ferry & lorry driver strikes & blockades, breakdowns & all the other crap that came in the direction of my cab fan, I got a sense of achievement from getting there & back no matter what happened along the way, eventually I went back on UK work, driving then became just a job & I never had the feeling of anticipation at the start of a working week again, I went back abroad again, but that had changed too, the lack of customs, mobile phones & increased enforcement had taken all the fun out of it for me, so I went back to UK again, at that point I began to explore other avenues & came off the road for a while, but I’ve got diesel running through my veins so was soon trucking again, eventually I moved to Canada & I now have a fully blinged up long nosed Peterbilt that I belt around Canada & the USA, it’s as much fun as it sounds, but if I could turn back the clock I swap it all to go back to my early days in Europe

Why do some drivers only like Euro work? Is it because you just drive a lot on long distance trunk routes and do little else and don’t have to mix with many people or bother to do much else except sleep and drive or is it not like that? Maybe you do multi drops and speak to all different people in different languages , and euro traffic jams are better? Whats the crack?

Because they want to drive on the proper side of the road :grimacing:

I do it because it my dream job, I’ve wanted to do this since I was a small child. I’ve done my fair share of UK work and the 2 dont compare, for all the reasons people have stated. Cruising down an empty motorway still over a days driving from your delivery. Plentiful free motorway parking. Seeing the seasons and weather change. The Alps. The fact that in Italy you can get 7 drops done in a fairly short day never having to wait hours to tip, unless you catch them at lunch, then its time for yours. I love it and they just don’t compare. Try it Mike, you may find you love it too.

I’d certainly love to try it for a few weeks, i think i’d fail as many do when they realise its not just for a few weeks and this is your full time job all the time. I like to be home, even though i tramp here. You guys who do it though are definateley passionate about it.

I could ask the same of you Mike. Why do you sit in an office all day while claiming on here to drive a truck? Is it because your boring and only trained to tick boxes? Or is it you don’t like to work too many hours away from your gardening?

I just like to get the ‘word on the street’, so i can sound like i know what i’m talking about.

I prefer to do Europe because it’s a darn site more adventurous. The traffic jams are fewer, the traffic less. More, many many more and better quality stopping places. You can organise your day easier. It’s possible to even have time to stop for a ■■■■, one that includes even walking to the proper facilities. More sun, more mountains. Better nights out.

Ok, its easier to drive, less traffic, less traffic jams more places to stop and better nights out and more adventorous. What do you talk about when you stop if you’ve just driven all day? The nice drive which everyone else has just done too?

All sorts really, but the drive will be one of those things, especially if it’s over the Alps or somesuch.

The thing is, Great Britain is very small, so it’s enjoyable to go somewhere that takes several days to get to. Dunno why, it just is. And has been said, truck drivers are treated in a totally different way on the mainland.

It’s not for everyone but most drivers who have tried it seem to prefer it.
