Why do some truckers drive such crappy cars?

I test drove this last weekend & have just ordered one…

Not so crappy me thinks… :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Morning.

So what car for crappy money should I look at then ■■

More decent looking for crappy money I think

Looking at about £1200 to spend, 25 mile commute a day and prob parked up at weekend.
I was thinking of a bmw 320 maybe, not long since sold my Yamaha 1300sp bike but fancy a car this time.

Take it easy out there

You need a 2000 530d, large comfy an economical considering. It so happens I have one parked up near Ipswich that hasn’t been driven since having two new front wings and passing it’s mot with no advisories last August. Owned it for the last 7 or 8 years so it’s a good un and about your price range.

Well, my 2000 530D Estate has just passed ANOTHER MOT, it’s by no means perfect, speedo works when it wants, one of the sensors on the rear suspension has gone haywire - so I raised the other side to match it, sits level horizontally but high at rear, keeps people from tailgating mind - 3 advisories on MOT, bloody water pump failed on way back though, took out the belts, took me 1 day and around £115 to fix, no damage to engine, car running sweet again.

Cost me £1600 over 5yrs ago (I’ve put it through 5 MOT’s), got wrote off (cat d) by a black cab 3yrs ago, paid out in full and bought back off insurance for £168.
Not very economical if I’m honest, but it’s got dual climate, 4x e/w, cruise control, massaging seats, split tailgate etc. Can’t grumble for a car that’s made me money during it’s ownership

If I’d not written mine off in 89, I’d still have it now. Fave car ever. 2.0GL in metallic green with a black vinyl roof, I put Capri Laser alloys on it, and one of those Hella grilles with spots in it. Loved it to bits. Went like the clappers and for some reason, I used to get about 8 or 9 mpg better than book in it. Oh, and it was an estate. Used it as my daily, limo, builders van, caravanette, coach. If it was still on the road I’d pay silly money to get it back.

For me its simply cost, I drive an old nail because that’s all I can afford to drive. To be honest I don’t care, as long as it starts when I need it to and gets me from A too B in one piece I’m happy.

Many reasons why some of us run older, not necessarily crap, cars.

Depreciation or lack of it being the obvious one, i’d rather live in a nice house tucked out the way than pay monthly interest on something depreciating like hell sitting on an identical driveway in front of identical houses situated all the way along an identical road, all home to identical people.
I can afford new if i wanted one, i don’t, what does a new car do that any of my old ones don’t, apart from cost thousands in depreciation every year.
Not being worried about the arse holes out there who’ll damage it for you deliberately or accidentally, it collects another dent or scrape so what?
Faults able to be fixed at home in most cases.

Interest, and i don’t mean money either, much as i wouldn’t give you a thankyou for a modern lorry, unfortunately i have no choice in lorry issued to me unless i buy my own, but with cars i don’t have to have to drive the same car as everyone else, i can drive something interesting that pleases me devoid of all the electronic faff i neither want nor need.

What puzzles is why are lorry drivers, people who should be or at least used to be individuals, worried about what car they or anyone else at work drives.
Whats the old saying, borrowing money to buy things you don’t need to impress people you don’t necessarily like?

Good luck to anyone who wants a new car, if it pleases them for the pleasure it gives them personally then good luck to them, similarly there are some of us who really do not like modern cars for a variety of reasons, i think they are about as crap as modern lorries and hold no interest nor wish from me, but each to their own eh.

Where I work, my colleagues all drive fancy motors -BMW’s Audi’s etc,and until quite recently they used to ridicule my 51 plate Mondeo with 200,000+ on the clock until I explained that unlike them I am the only single parent, single wage earner still paying a mortgage amongst us and until my kids leave home I cannot afford a new car probably not for many years to come! Amazingly though, over time my Mondeo has proved considerably more reliable than their fancy cars have!

Absolutely. What new car would provide 6 litre V12,5 speed manual,165 mph less than £300 per year insurance and zero depreciation. :smiling_imp:

Just bought a 20 year old golf diesel £350. Years mot. Does the job

for me I am just totally uninterested in car culture, my wife has had some nice motors in her time, but for me I just don’t get it, especially the expense, what a total and utter waste of money spending 3 or 4 k a year for car. I have an old works van that I kept when I jacked it all in. 8yo 36k on the clock, well maintained, its warm, comfortable, 60+ to the gallon, keeps up with the flow of traffic, no DPF, I will get another 20 years out of it. People who obsess about cars are barking.

In my 15 years of driving cars I’ve never spent more than £1500 on one,so I decided that it was time to treat myself to this…

2.0 SRI CDTI
19k miles one owner.

My last WORK car, and it was 17 years old at that point, oh, and my mother GAVE it to me, so it was free.

Probably because they earn a grand a week but live in a rented house no savings or pension/holiday money and drive an old nail with coat hanger for an aeriel.

As I said to a manager a couple of months ago, my £600 car does the same thing as a £16,000 car so why would I want the debt? Its a 2.0 jap estate so its reliable and big enough for my cash and carry trips. In 7 months it has cost me 3 wiper blades and £295 for a caliper and welding (MOT). The welder did warn me to scrap it next year though because the inner sills would cost a fortune to fix if the MOT tester spots the rust. It would be a shame because its a good car that has not once let me down

I have two cars. One for work, and one for nice sunday drives.

I’m glad to read most of the drivers are sane and don’t overspend for stupid expensive cars. When I drove trucks my ride home was 8 years old Civic, great reliable car, cheap to fix and maintain. Now I drive Renault - never again :imp:
Many of my fellow countrymen are idiots, not heaving enough income to support themselves they jump for expensive cars Merc’s, BMW’s, Audi’s etc., then they cant buy a set of winter tires, because of the price of 18"-19" etc.

 :grimacing: well I needed a minivan and a cheap one, Scenic ought to do it, as you know we don’t have Honda Odyssey in Europe.
