Had the pleasure of meeting Constantine on a thoroughly miserable Monday morning
Pleasure to meet you too 8wheels, I recognised your lorry straight away on your first attempt onto site. You done well getting up that ramp on the second go and was unloaded real quick too. Some would say I reckon you can do that with your eyes closed.
I wish I could’ve spoken more but that’s a mammoth job for us to get measured up and it was our first day, like the archaoelogists.
All our first day’s are a speed test of how long the actual job will take compared what we quoted Always the worst day, as the office gets it continually skewed the wrong way!
8wheels:
I got so cold and wet that when I finally stopped for my break I put my socks on like mittens to dry them out with the night heater roaring away. And all I could think of was “And if that bloke still wants a job like mine, he needs his head looking at!”
As for your final sentence hahahaha. I need my head tested…
You got a night heater to dry your socks, I forgot to put my waterproof site boots on that day and the building I was in, was missing a roof further down and that snow had melted into a big puddle internally for three rooms. For 60 minutes I spent trying to absorb that whole puddle with my socks, cold wet feet for the last 4 hours of shift!
No lights, bar in the rooms with no roof…definitely no heat, no toilets or running water anywhere on site either (they’d been stolen). Worst derelict site I’ve been too for a long while as there’s no security based on site either, so we can’t even use their facilities, like we normally do.
My third building was good too entire second floor had a “massive” flock of pigeons living in it over 50 at least (every window smashed and half the roof missing again). Had to spend an hour trying to scare them out (they were in the rooms with the roof still attached) before I could measure up otherwise they’d attack me, spent the next 3 hours in an inch of constant wet pigeon ■■■■ trying not to fall over!
That’s why I love hearing the ■■■■ on here about RDC facilities being poor…makes me think half of the RDC postings about their conditions don’t know they have been born yet as a lucky lorry driver! And I’m a Chartered Professional who has such an easy job, compared to a poor “screwdriver” on here with their poor sob stories…really
Might have come across negative but loving this current project, seen some amazing things in the buildings so far and with it being 10 minutes from home, no way I’m giving this project up yet, regardless of the dire ■■■■ site conditions, benefits outweigh the conditions for once!
When can I become an understudy to yourself again, I’m available 7 days a week anytime…

What are you driving again scaniason, as I keep seeing your company’s artics about on the A12 recently but you’ve got a different livered unit and trailer if I remember rightly. Don’t want to give the lights or horn to the wrong person now

I’ll not knock your enthusiasm for it, shame you’d not got a bit of plant experience as we’ll be needing a class 1 lowloader driver in a few months time. Although it’s a job I don’t want and have already made it clear but I’ve a feeling I’ll be doing 2 jobs for a while unless they open their eyes and realise that their 35 year service driver is going to retire and that now would be a good time to start looking for someone.

Hi Constantine,
It’s a silver Merc Actros, often with a silver curtainsider behind it. At the moment it’s unwritten - it’s supposed to be done soon, but they’ve been saying that since November It’s got my name plate in the front screen - ‘Gary’, and usually has Desmond the bear sitting on the centre console, unless he’s having a rest on the bunk.

Talk about throw me in at the deep end!!! You haven’t seen me drive a lorry yet, let alone any plant.
I’ve only got experience playing on site whilst being a “baby” site engineer, only driven 9t dumpers, 14t 360’s and 18t rubber duck excavators, oh and a Volvo “moxy”. To be honest I was useless at driving all of them, I’d need familiarization to be safe to myself loading them on, let alone others around me!
I hope to have my class 1 by then as well, if Pete gets me up to test standard by the end of this summer!

Gary,
I’m afraid I still haven’t seen it, but seen a lot of your others though, try to remember the number plates, but there are few to remember, even if I try to remember the end only!
Hope Des is recording that as POA, don’t want him breaking double manning techo regs you know!!!
I’ll keep a look out, do you go out on Monday and not come back until weekend etc? Might be the reason I miss it, as I’d imagine you’d leave early early on a Monday!
Take care out there gentlemen!
