Why is using Google Maps illegal then, ? If the phone’s in a cradle (like a satnav) and the standby mode is off so you don’t need to keep tapping it, where’s the problem?

Why is using a phone as a GPS illegal? As long as you don’t touch it and its in a cradle while your driving you’re doing nothing wrong…

And a satnav is less distracting?

Still thinking about getting a new sat nav and if I do it will be a tom tom 5150 as all the drivers on here who advocate it can’t be wrong. For now thoI use the Philips map book to cross reference.
Here’s my findings about my first night with the 5150…the regular route I use (ATM) is from M4 j11, wb to j13, nb up the 34 to the 40, nb to 42 and providing its clear, nb up the 6 to j11, 460 down into Cannock and turn right onto Lakeside, where we are down the end past DHL. Got on to M4 ok (managed that bit as we’re only 2mins away!) and from there on, it went pear shaped. Got towards Reading svcs and I was alerted to a road closure on my route, which I had checked various websites for before leaving and knew that the only closures were M6 j6-7 and M42 j9-10…it asked if I wanted to take the faster route and, not wanting to touch anything, left it to do its thing…it rerouted to come off at j12 and follow the A4 to Newbury, which I ignored, and as I got under the junction (with one eye on the nav) I watched it reroute round j12 and head east! It worked out that I was continuing West and all was quiet to j13. Hit the 34 and then kept getting messages about delays and a new route was 5 minutes quicker, did I want it? Kept saying no until the M40…up past j10 on M40 and again, kept on that it had found a quicker route blah blah so I thought it was notifying me of the M6 closure and would take me up the 446 or A5 ( without going into the menu, I couldn’t find a way of getting the route overview etc as a ‘button’ in the ‘personalised menu’, which would be better than the ‘truck’ & speed camera ones that are there). Got asked again up at Warwick svcs if I wanted to take this faster route, so I called its bluff and said yes! Heading south on the M42 from the M40 is no great shakes…until I had cleared the split. Several minutes later and I was ‘instructed’ to take the A38 (and cut across)…didn’t take that and the next instruction was…wait for it…‘continue on the M5’! Obviously ignored that and then all was well till M6, where it wanted to route me down the 54! Carried on to j11 and things were looking up… It managed to get me to Pentalvers roundabout but instead of ‘turn right’, it wanted me to go straight on and probably in the narrow back lane that I use on occasions. Won’t bother with the return journey but it wasn’t as bad…I just kept saying no to any instruction! As for the amount of roadworks etc it shows on the RHS of the screen…most can be ignored, along with any delays (unless it runs into an hour or so!!)…was showing 7 sets for the return, came across 2!! If a new driver had followed those instructions, he’d have still been out there now! Those of you that have the TT5150, do you get the same ■■■■ ups or have I done something wrong? Do you ignore the warnings etc? And another thing…mate of mine uses a Snooper for trucks and says its just as bad!
What you are seeing is perfectly normal. The TomTom will show all planned roadworks, lane closures etc. However, if it shows no delay for any particular roadworks, you can generally ignore it. Where it does show a delay, then you need to at least be aware of it (because delays with a minutes figure shown are real, measured delays).
Roymomdo…I accept what you say about the RWs but any idea as to why it would throw up such strange routing on those 2 or 3 major occasions? The traffic delays seem accurate enough, probably getting the info from HA, and we know what they are like for keeping it all up to date! Give it another go tonight and see how it goes!
That’s the point of TomTom’s HD traffic service - they are NOT relying solely on info from the Highways Authority. If the TomTom is showing a 5 minute delay, you can be reasonably sure that a 5 minute delay has been experienced by other TomTom users. Road and lane closure info does come from HA.

Please clarify, is there an online connection between all tomtom-s used in the area?
No. Their system collects anonymous average speed data from mobile phones, as well as more detailed (but still anonymous) information from HD-traffic equipped TomTom devices (plus of course traffic info from the Highways Authority etc. There is no connection of any sort between TomTom devices.
