Isle of Wight?

Not Isle of Wight

we’d passed that about 4 hours before

Guernsey

Caen

Not Isle of Wight

It’s not the UK

That implies that you have shipped out of Southampton or Portsmouth as you don’t really pass the Isle of Wight on any other routes. So 4 hours from the Isle of Wight has to put us on the French coast between Cherbourg and Boulougne, you probably wouldn’t reach the channel islands in 4 hours. It is of course not forced to be a port, just somewhere you are passing. But you don’t really run along the coast on any of those routes. Hmmm

We,ve had Boulougne, Dieppe, Le Havre, Caen and Cherbourg…

So I’ll try Lion sur Mere in the Ouistreham area.

St Malo

Not Ouistreham or St Malo

Zeebrugge?

Not Zebee

having checked the piccy details we were in fact about 8 1/2 hours from port of departure and so actually about 7 1/2 past the Isle of Wight. I’d haf a drink or 5 by then and lost track of time.

As a clue that was taken to the port side and there was also “land” visible to the starboard

Well that ties it down a bit - not!

Or maybe it does, your looking at France, perhaps somewhere on the Normandy Peninsula, possibly Carteret, and the “land” to the starboard could be one of the Channel Islands?

So if it wasn’t Southampton or Portsmouth as your departure point it must have been Poole yes ? And 8 1/2 hrs out would put you pretty close to France yes ?

Are you on the boat from Plymouth to Santander?

Wouldn’t have passed the Isle of Wight though Stevie…

But if you were having a drinky or 5 you weren’t about to get off in the next hour or two so a long sea trip then. But Poole only goes to Cherbourg or Channel islands. Unless of course someone else was driving…

I’m with Martin, the probability is that the land on the port side is the Cotentin peninsula somewhere and that on the starboard is the channel islands.

Although the OP hasnt actually said that the vessel is a ferry, it could be hes on a cruise ship. In which case he could be anywhere in either direction from the IOW.

how about Flamanville

The Saturday morning Poole boat sails to Santander…

So is that the answer to your question or do we have to work out where on the ocean wave you were when the picture was taken ?
