When the truck rolls over

I drive class 2s. I am on a regular run which involves using A140 of J51 off the A14. Since August 2013 there have been 4 Artics roll over on that stretch that i know off. I am a fairly new driver but this scares the hell out of me. I never hear if the drivers are ok. I have seen Bartrums rolled and they are local. Everytime i use this road i always sit at 40 and clench the old cheeks :open_mouth: Widening the road would be nice but this wont happen in a rush.

My point being… Is no news good news. I hope they are all ok. As i pass the crash sites i tend to wonder if they are ok so if anybody can deliver an update that would be nice. Its so sad that as people pass the rolled trucks they find time to take piccys

Used that road myself, can’t really see a problem with it, just don’t drive like a ■■■■■ like they did and you will be fine!

Funny enough, I’m gonna be using that road later this morning Norwich - Needham Market, (don’t think I’ve used it before ?) hope all the Flat to the Mat Jockeys don’t get too upset behind me because I’ll be keeping to the speed limit in an attempt to keep it upright !

I have driven an artic along A140 regularly and find that very few car drivers observe the 50 limit in Suffolk and most LGV drivers ignore the 40 limit. I have even been overtaken on the 30 stretches.

When I get to the DC near Diss I always give all the vehicles behind me the opportunity to pass.

On it now !
Wish me luck, sounds like I’m gonna need it !

Must be faulty vehicles?

Or maybe a faulty drivers arse, maybe the nerve endings have gone in the arse so they don’t feel the G’s starting to build and the vehicle starting to lean.

High time they came out with a keep it upright app for the fancy phone, or a G limiter built in or some other software, how can they expect a driver to steer a lorry, sorry truck, and at the same time consider speed/camber/load/weight/CoG/curve/surface/traffic etc etc and input accordingly, drivers shouldn’t have to do all this.

Yes sarcasm.

There’s nothing wrong with the road, just some of it’s inhabitants.

Do you think it would work on a straight road, like the M74? Seems to be a popular place for muppets to put their truck on its side!!

& drink coffee, text, smoke, watch DVD’s, read a map, comb their hair, clean their teeth, shave ■■?

They’ll be asking us to concentrate on our driving next (huff)

Having a 45 now them I’m going to risk it !

That’s obviously ‘Mechanical Faults’
Lorry’s like to be swerving all over the place (don’t you know ?) lol.

Buggered if i know Weeto, quite how they manage it on a straight road i haven’t yet worked out, save for instabilty due to no bugger having a clue how to load or set their lorry up to prevent the tail from wagging the dog.

That would indeed come under Mechanical Faults as Martin Viking notes.

High time automatic steering was brought in, maybe repetitive strain syndrome causing loss of limb control due to having to actually steer a lorry, ridiculous in this day and age…could be a nice claim there… :unamused:

Mabey the automatic levelling system was one of the old Mk 1 type that defaults to putting the vehicle on its side when it’s broken. The mark 2 is much better though.

The system is normally found on the O/S of the cab behind the round stability assistance device. Normally it needs a good slap.

I agree, and impatience is the key word here, i have also driven on that stretch of road many times, and i found that there are a hell of a lot of drivers, both HGV and cars who are hell bent on overtaking, and they dont care who they force into the ditch, so long as theyre ok. So dont be afraid, just keep to your speed limit, and ignore all of the maniacs.
What they in fact do, is force drivers across to the N/S, to avoid them having an accident, then the F. off. leaving everyone else to clear up the mess.

They have stabilisers, Some like to show off and not use them.

The only dodgey bit of the a140 is at Stonham . the rest of the road you will get no thanks for sitting at 40 holding loads of cars up the police where always happy for trucks to ‘make progress’ as long (as you wasn’t being silly) as it stops a the cars over taking as much. I once got stopped by a police biker making for a bit too much progress on the 140 one day but he was more bothered about me not noticing him behind me for a Cpl of miles than the speed, pulled me over and gave me a telling off about not using my mirrors.

Stonham is where the camera van parks, I always drive to the speed limit.

The two Bartrums were down to strong winds I believe. As for the bulker, not sure how that occurred, same goes for the Scania last week that ended up in the field. I see a lot of trucks coming to grief because they’ve got too close to the n/s verge. They drop a wheel into the soft and that’s it, game over. The soft ground just pulls the truck in. Hence the reason so many vehicles have fallen off the road along the new stretch of A11 between Barton Mills and Elveden.

I actually survived my drive down this Infamous A140 yesterday, I wasn’t looking for thanks from the car drivers & I wasn’t going to Trust a Coppers judgement on wether or not he was going to nick me for doing 50 on the S/C bits, the laws the law & making ‘Normal Progress’ in a HGV is 40 mph.

I know it’s slow on certain stretches of road, maybe they could have a sign that says ‘HGV 50’ on certain stretches of road- for example the A5, there’s load of nice wide straight bits where you can do 50 without any problems, but then where would the 'S’camera vans park where they are guaranteed revenue. Lol.

Apart from stonam I’m not sure I’ve seen a camera van on that road . Yes I know the law is 40 and there are plenty of differences of opinion on here over that but on that road high 40s seems to keep the cars content for them not to embark on suicide missions to get past
