What's the going rate for an external TM?

hell i want a bit of this sounds easy money to me…

As I understand it, a TM can only act for a maximum of four companies and 50 vehicles nowadays and like the solicitor who posted above, I can’t see many wanting be be involved with a one vehicle licence. Certainly if I ever came off the road and decided to earn a living as a TM then I wouldn’t use up a quarter of my allowance for £100 a month.

If its just to supplement your income its OK,also if you act for a haulier with several vehicles the fee goes up.

I think the “going rate” for a CPC holder can only go up, partly because of the Traffic Commisioners clamping down on TMs who are simply a “name on the form” and partly because TMs who got acquired rights before 1975 are now very elderly and starting to pass away.

I might consider doing it at some stage in the future but it would have to pay at least as much as an average truck driver’s wage.

I passed both of mine by exam Harry, and only work as a part-time TM as I had a bad RTA several years ago which finished my lorry driving days.Being a lorry nut I am still in the loop and take my TM work seriously and am in no way a phantom TM.
I look at everything a proper TM should look at,and if things are not right the operator gets told.If they don’t comply with the law, they don’t have my services anymore,as a couple of them in the past have found out.
Cheers Dave.

I think the TC’s aren’t clear as to how they envisage the regulatory environment for the future in what is a varied, fragmented industry.

I think an arbitrary limit of 4 O licences is unfair, there are many top notch owner drivers out there who’s only failings are being bad at paperwork,I’ve represented a few at public enquiries !

Provided a TM has systems and or staff in place to run the licence properly ,why should he or she not run 10 operators?the ultimate objective must be a well run fleet on UK roads?

It would allow the small operator to have a management system in place which reflects that of the larger operator who can fund a full time TM.

I think the four O licence and fifty vehicle limit is the right limit. The external TM role has been abused in the past. There has been to many people with CPC’s down on licences as TM who never go near the operator, which knackers the job for those that do it right.
If you look on the application & decisions lists for the various traffic area’s you will see that a lot of TM’s are losing their repute for failing to do the job properly, and that includes operators with their own CPC.

I know they’ll blather on about it’s with road safety being so important, and the rest of it, but the Inland Revenue doesn’t say to accountants you can only have so many clients and similarly they’re happy for maintenance to be subbed out so why can’t a TM for hire sub out aspects of his role whilst retaining overall responsibility?

Spot on,also less susceptible to pressure than an employed TM,from the TC’s perspective,I would have thought.

I agree with the name only external TM 's ,the sooner vosa gets rid the better, they seem very common in my rural backwater, probably because the authorities haven’t the resources to wander far from the Motorways and dual carriageways where they seem common
