What was so good about Atkinsons?

Not a fair comparison,as one has a sleeper, where as the other has a daycab. But the same sort of line to the cab as Harry says.Thats only my opinion.
Cheers Dave.

yeah, it has windows ,lights wheels etc but hardly a striking resemblance  have never got confused with them yet. and surely the 141 wasn’t a long way off like he claimed .

hiya,
The 80 was a day cab as was the Sed Ak in question a totally different shape to the hitherto curvy Borderer and even the tilting gear was positioned and operated on the new motor as it did on the 80, a pal of mine was with the Atki gang (drinking chums) and one of their test pilots (now sadly deceased) hinted later it was to get a few ideas for the design department but the tie-up with Seddon outfit was still hush hush and he could’nt say too much at that time, a case of industrial espionage if you ask me,and yes i would have preferred the new Sed Ak to the 80 rubbish but if i could have got hold of the 110 it would have been no contest, PS i’m only talking appearance here and nothing to do performance because the 80 did’nt have any.
thanks harry long retired.

its the appearance thing i dont get, they dont look like they are that close in looks.things like the headlights are in different places, the side of the day cab and the sleepers dont look similar, the wheel arches, the grilles not similar. to claim they have a striking resemblance…

hiya,
Never said exact resemblance would they have dared, but if you can name any other motor in the mid 60s that looked similar to the the 80 i reckon the Sed Ak was somewhere close to it, i’m not talking exactness here but i know lots of ideas from the 80 was incorporated into the first Sed Aks i witnessed the photography i was there and because a firm i worked for a firm later that ran the 400s i got to see for myself the likeness and a very similar layout of the equiptment to my old 80, i must be the only person who has ever had anything to do with road transport who noticed the similarity though.
thanks harry long retiired.

I agree with you Harry, there is a likeness in the shell of the cab, obviously the grill and wheel arches are not going to be similar as glenman claims, but the structure of the basic lorry has similarities.
Cheers Dave.

i think your dates are all wrong maybe. and would a 110 looked like a 80? and you said striking resemblance .
actually i see more transcon/man/berliet/saviem in the sed ak 400.

What are we comparing here ? Harry says Scania 80 and then people are comparing it to a Scania 111.

scania 80/81, the 110/111 and the 140/141 all shared a similar look did they not. looks only ,not performance .

hiya,

My 80 was D reg it’s featured in the Northwest trucks website that would be 1966 not too many of your list knocking about then the 110s ( we had 2) was a much taller cab a different motor altogether and i’d have loved one.

Can’t see any resemblances to this cab which is the same as a Transcon etc.

about as much as a scania 80 and a sed ak 400. :unamused:

Hi I drove a few Atkinson’s and my personal favorite was the view line I had for around four years on heavy haulage as it never missed a beat and I was running over the water quite a lot with it in the early 70s it had a 250 ■■■■■■■ and 6 speed ZF box 6x4 and would go anywhere. I thought the 400 S.A. was alright and the 401 and 411s were a big improvement over the 400s nearly all ■■■■■■■ and fuller box which leaves the Strato with the DAF space cab 14litre ■■■■■■■ and twin splitter which I still think was the best wagon I ever drove I have never driven a V8 Scania or A F16 but most others from those manufacturers and MAN s both straight 6 and V10 Fiats, ERFs,Scammells, Various Leylands,Fodens, Dafs Mercedes and a few others mostly artics but I still think the Strato was the wagon to have everything for me and when they finally got to producing the perfect wagon they pulled the pin. :frowning:
cheers Johnnie
