Slow going on hills but well lit on the flat ( Gallon of oil every 100miles)

C reg F7 at Waterbeach test centre in Cambridge, I think it’s shut now.It was closed due to, large amounts of contaminates (mainly av-gas) being found was, declared unsafe. Also the examiner retired.
Thank god for that I thought I had broke the examiner! He was a nice old boy with a bag of sweets to calm you down.
I remeber taking my pass certificate back to my boss as I wanted to be let loose on the new Scania 113m and he made me wait a week but that’s a different story. M482 FJF

Follow on from…when did u pass class 1,what truck did u do it in,ford cargo for me with single axle flat trailor
Ford D series with single axle trailer. IIRC the handbrake looked like a door handle that you cracked to the left to release. Trailer one of those ex BR type things with an automatic landing leg and wheel.
You were about the same height as a van. Pretty low down, not like climbing into an Actros these days where you ■■■■ near need an air bridge.
Passed with the RITB on the Isle of Wight. Test station was at Rookley. Think the examiner may have been a Pat Boyd. Trainer was a guy called Bill, ex Brummie who smoked a pipe!
Also did the PSV which I passed on a Lodekka FS a few months later complete with crash gear box.
An old Dodge 500 unit. (same cab as this one)
It had a gear lever which had the similarity and the same travel with wear and tear as a stick in a bucket.
It had a 2 speed axle, the splitter used to go in with a horrible mechanical clunk which often went into false neutral.
An absolute pig of a thing, but I managed to pass after a 5 day course.
It wasn’t for the faint hearted.
some sort of Ford with a car type gearbox and a tiny little single axle trailer - I had practised till near perfection with a ERF twin split and full length tandem, what a mess I made reversing with this silly little trailer Never mind I got lucky, turned up with my black’n White scarf round my neck and the examiner had his Newcastle bobble hat on, we talked about football as I drove about then he said I passed. Keegan had just joined as a player and we were all a bit excited, far too excited to worry about driving . Things were a bit more relaxed back then.
Only class 2 alas and similar to this Foden but with a different company. Not my pic. Twelve speed g’box, tilt cab, no power steering and a hydraulic throttle that kept losing pressure and revs, surprisingly passed 1st time though! Would love a drive in it again.
Pete.
Passed in a TK Bedford with a two speed axle, Scammell automatic Coupling and a 20 foot flat trailer
DAF 2100 (or was it 2300?)
Bedford TK & 30 ft boxvan.
1998 Scania towing a mini Somerfield trailer.
I passed in 1991 with a Renault, same model as the painted black one Clarkson is driving in these vids…
Coincidentally, he seems to be pulling what looks like an ex-Royal Mail trailer to boot, although I pulled a flatbed with a concrete bridge post lying on the back for my test, if memory serves.

What is anyone’s preferred 2 speed change method ,I like the electric motor because you can watch the ameter dip to see if it’s in ,a bit like watching the Rev counter bounce with a twin splitter .
