I think i worked with ‘Taffy’ some years ago on tippers and i’m sure he drove that truck at some point, possibly also Paul Holloway from Irthlingborough (ex Clarks like me). Jog any memories?

Hello Steve, yes thats who i’m thinking of, haven’t seen him in 20 yrs i reckon.
One of the nicest blokes around then.
Worked with him for ■■■■ Hull for a while before he shut up shop…jeez just realised that was '81 don’t time fly when you’re having fun.
Hi Guys
If we`re talking speeds in 71 to 72 I drove an AEC with a 690 engine that would cruise at 70mph and in 84 we had 321 MAN twin steers on P&O with a 12 speed box would do 70mph in intermediate top and then change up and regularly hit 82mph on the flat at 38 tonne ,man they were fast.

Back in the olden day’s I was driving a pink (yes pink) F88 in the livery of Flying Cargo of Slough. I joined the M11 southbound at Bishops stortford (that’s as far as it went back then) and hurtled southbound at warp 8.
A couple of mile’s down the M11 I was stopped by a policeman in a plain white car. The officer getting on in years climbed into my cab and asked for my log book, all in order he asked how fast was I doing…don’t know I said…"77mph’ he stated “were you scared lad” he asked, “nope” I replied…he then launched into a tirade that left me shaking in my boots…I honestly thought he was going to slap me!
He left without giving me a ticket and I never went over the speed limit on the M11 again.
At the opposite end of this post, I do remember that the 40 mph speed limits on roads like the A74 and A90 were rigidly enforced, in fact all speed limits in Scotland were enforced
I have only been done for speeding twice and both times were on the A76 near Dumfries when I wore a younger mans clothes.
I do remember some of the dutch pig transporters would come hammering past on the italian motorways at night on their way down to naples. It was rumoured they had a helium mix in their tyres to keep them running cool at high speeds, Dunno if that’s true or not , I think one of the firms was Govers, always double manned from Gronigen area.

If I remember correctly drivers were being fined £1 for every mph over 40mph on the A74 in the 70s.
we had some of the last f10s made on hire from dawsons and if you pulled out the hand throttle out at 56mph it made you a very useful extra 5 mph, nice when you needed to crack on.

If they helium in their tyres they would weigh lighter surely. I think you’ll find its a nitrogen product they use in tyres as they do at costco.
i only ever had a powerliner that was rapid, but me old man, had a few
a 180 ■■■■■■■ that rapid over the gardner then a 220 ■■■■■■■ these were
surpassed by a big j with rolls 220, 85mph flat out loaded to 32 tons, but as he
always used to say, “drive ahead,” you never when you need to stop suddenly, and keep your eyes on the mirrors, he was only caught once in his career, by a
skid solo on the a 66, he was so far up the trailers a@@e he couldnt be seen through the mirrors(the copper didnt know you could swear so much in one
sentence),
still makes a change from the flash in the mirror, and the brown envelope
a fortnight later.
I had a 3300 with a Dutch firm that had been fitted with a coach diff ,used tgo cruise regularly & 80 but try to bump a kerb & it ,would stall. The clock was 10mph slow ;got nicked at newmarket doing 70…( Overtook a marked up Police car in broad daylight. I wondered why everybody was staying behind him ? V.grumpy plod. )
My dad ran a 1950 AEC mammoth major 8 wheel tipper 36 mph flat.out…ok when it was new 20mph speed limit on lorries at the time however in 1959 the m1 was opened and 36 Mph just couldnt cut it …it was scrapped in 1964.In the late 50 s Leyland comets in 4 wheelers were the fastest thing around with an eaton 2 speed axle and 5 speed gearboxes theres had vacuum assisted brakes (I think) and the problem was you needed an airfield to stop one.In the sixties Dodges were very fast with perkins engines and eaton two speed axles.Few 8 wheelers could do ,much above 50 mph at this time

Apart from the Norde (North Derbyshire Engineering) which was reputed to have gone so fast that it burned a set of tyres by London.
Obviously apocryphal, but an indicator of something out of th ordinary.

I may be wrong here Spardo but didn’t Toft Brothers and Tomlinson from Darley Dale have something to do with Norde?
No idea Chris, I remember it only vaguely and these days such things take on the aspect of an urban myth in my mind.
Which is why I inserted the word ‘apocryphal’, just to cover myself.
If you have further information I’d love to hear it.

Well David I seem to remember someone telling me that when the M1 was opened as far as the A52 Notts-Derby,Toft Brothers and Tomlinson were doing two trips to London (not sure where) with the same driver and Norde had summat to do with it.Like you I’d like to find out more about this subject. One of my friends said it was Mickleover Transport, who worked for Leys “Black Heart” Malleable Castings that were doing the 2 x Smoke trips, but then some other bugger said it was T B & T.
