What motivated you

i think it must have been genetic , dad & uncles all drove . when my dad threatened to kick my arse if i went driving gandad chimed in with " i told your dad that but he tok no notice ". i said the same to my son and he has been a driver for 24 years now , mind you he hates the job now , reckons it’s rubbish compared to when he started . i’m out of it now but from what i see daily there are 25% drivers and 75% muppets on the trucks now .

seems quite a pattern forming, lots who do it, and seem to enjoy it, have the bug from being a kid.
i’m the same, went out from 11 with a family friend and was hooked. i did well at school, but as soon as i was old enough, got into transport, and got my class 1 when i was 23. think i’m pretty good at what i do, just aswell, as can’t do anything else now :grimacing:
19 years down the line, and i still wouldn’t change what i do. like anything it has its ups and downs, and i’ve been weekended in some right dives over the years, handballed more loads, (back in the day when i was a lad :grimacing: ) than i care to remember, but i still wouldn’t change it. the job has also enabled me to get to places a 9-5 would never have got me, and got some cracking memories, met some great people, and plenty of numpties, you know, ex- s.a.s, chalked off on a bay and all that.

been stuck in the u.k this year sortingfamily stuff, but going back to european stuff in february, and really looking forward to it.

change 1 thing■■? its tough as there is alot that needs changing, but guess i’d go for better conditions for truck drivers, truckstops, parking, facilities and the like. 15 hours in a metal box everyday, you should at least be able to have a good, frequent choice of places to stop, with safe parking, a decent meal, and a hot shower, without it costing 25% of “your” days wages.
should also be the option of big rest/parking areas like those in france.

Well me when a kid always wanted to know how to drive 1 & wondered how fast forward several years left school went to collage done a few jobs got married had kids kinda fell into transport driving vans quite happy had my own business for a while then went to work for a local company driving vans & 7.5 t

After a few years took my Cat C have done some work since driving vans 7.5 & C do I regret it no should have done it sooner really do I still enjoy it yep

No my dad dint drive a lorry even if he did he pos wouldnt have taken me

Keep them coming, its nice to see that some dads did something right :sunglasses:

WAS WORKING"ON THE TOOLS" AND AFTER MANY YEARS I RECKONED "THEM DRIVERS SEEM TO BE A HAPPY LOT/HAVE AN EASY TIME OFF IT(COMPARED TOO POOR ME) I"LL HAVE SOME OFF THAT , AND I DID AND BOY ! HOW WRONG WAS I!!! OK I DO LIKE THE DRIVING I EXPECT LIKE SOME I"M WORN OUT WIV THE SEEMINGLY ENDLESS CHANGES TO WHAT SEEMED TO BE A REASONABLE SYSTEM .(RESISTING THE URGE TO DRONE ON ABOUT THE (TO ME)FUTILITY OF THIS dcpc)

You should never resist the urge to drone on about the futility of the DCPC, just go for it

By the way the caps lock is the key with “Caps Lock” written on it … in case you ever need it

i wanted to drive trucks since i was at primary school, had a massive cider factory behind the school and use to see their trucks everyday, use to remember playing truck drivers around the play ground!!! sad i know but i didn’t know better then
i have done many jobs through the years from laying tarmac to driving plant and mechanics, but i have always ended up going back to driving, i must have gypsy blood in me just love being out there on the move everyday,
i am lucky, get given my work to do and don’t get constant phone calls all day, so i am free to work my own days out.
it’s cost me a marriage on the way but i wouldn’t change it for a thing, i have a great house and a comfortable life so it’s done me ok through the years and long may it continue :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

delboytwo:
What motivated you to become a trucker?

Laziness.

I hope this helps.

Went with the old man when he worked for the BRS out of Newport dock when I was a kid, never wanted to do anything else so when the opportunity came about I took it without hesitation and haven’t looked back since.

i spent my childhood crawling around on the floor pushing toy cars and trucks around…now i get paid to do it for real :sunglasses:

Wow. Do you work in the corgi factory?

no…what i meant was,i now get to operate full size fully operational trucks…for cash :grimacing:

had my class 2 paid for by a previous employer things were going ■■■■ so decided to take the plunge for class 1 and no i dont regret it 1 bit i earn decent money not doing all that much and if im honest im qualified for nothing so this is it for me :grimacing:

My Dad was a lorry driver all of his working life.Same as quite a few previous posters.I never wanted to do anything other than drive lorries.
If I had my time again,I would still be a lorry driver.

 left school in 76 without a qualification to my name, didnt even empty my desk, as a certain alice cooper said schools out for ever  1st job chicken slaughterer 19000 on a good day, since then factory, foundry, building sites, council worker, doorman, lifetime ambitions just 2, see queen in concert, and get a class 1,acheived both, also got all machine tickets for landfill plant, when i was a kid went miles in lorries and sometimes my dad took me with him in to work,on a cat D8 and box, could you see that happen today :exclamation: seems it gets in the blood, diesel in the vains they call it,also watched hell drivers a few times that was a major influence  wouldnt change much if i could do it again, enjoy getting paid listening to the radio, watching the scenery out the window, and looking down on fit milfs when stuck in traffic :sunglasses:

Same as a lot of the other poster’s, going with dad in the fifties and early sixties wetted my appetite for lorries so became a HGV fitter. Passed my class two in a Foden with Slaters Transport of Pickering in 1976 and enjoyed the job until enforced retirement (sick wife) in 2002. Would do it all over again if I could.

Pete.

If I were a 10 year old boy in 2012 and all I seen of my dad was driving a
truck after a 15 hrs shift for £7.00 hr just for him to sleep 9hrs then to start the same mind numbing job again. Do you really think I would want that after having access to the internet and seeing what really is available out there?
I very much doubt any son of mine would be driving trucks for a living!

I pray and hope.

Well that’s what our father’s did, when on Thermalite mine would load his Foden FG eight legger for Fort William (based in Reading) on a Sunday and leave monday morning. He would arrive home on friday and then go in on the saturday to grease the lorry. Saturday afternoon he would be at home but sunday would be loading again. He enjoyed it, he was a cabinet maker by trade but prefered driving lorries. I used to go with him on local runs and that’s what got me hooked though I only did tipper work which to him was the equivalent of me being an axe murderer so he showed no interest at all in what I did!
